Problems importing MPEG2 movies

I have the Cyberlink mpeg2 codec that came preinstalled on my Dell laptop. I
can watch MPEG2 formatted videos in Windows Media Player and I can also
convert to WMV using Windows Media Encoder 9.

But when I try to import mpeg2 video into WMM 2.1, first off an "activemovie
window" pops up instead of previewing in the window in WMM. When I try to
convert there is no video (only sound).

I've gone through and disabled all other directshow filters in the
compatibility options but that didn't help. The only thing that worked was
installing and enabling the Elucard MPEG2 codec (which isn't as good as the
Cyberlink one since it doesn't deinterlace and causes playback issues).

So far the only program that doesn't like the Cyberlink mpeg2 codec is WMM.
Right now to convert part of a mpg2 formatted file to WMV I either have to
convert to an AVI format and then import that into WMV or convert the whole
file using WME9 and then import that.

Is there any way to get WMM to import mpeg2 files directly?

Basically that link says give up trying to import MPEG2 format and convert
it using something like VirtualDub. That's kind of a defeatist attitude.
It's also what I'm doing already. I was hoping for a more practical solution
since the more times you convert a video, the worse the quality gets.

Actually it isn't a "defeatist attitude" it is experience.
WMM doesn't work with MPEG2 files.
It doesn't even like MPEG1 files much.
