Problems getting IE 6 to open in Windows XP

When I attempt to open IE on my computer, which is operating in a XP
environment, as soon as my Home page opens up, I get a message that IE has
encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I get a choice of debug, send
an error report or not. I have reset the computer back to different dates,
both of which were days for which IE had opened and operated successfully.
At one point I got a message to upgrade to IE 7.0. That also woud not open.
Even after resetting the computer back a few days, IE 6 still would not open.
Obviously with IE not opening, I can not get to the Internet Tools to do
many of the fixes that I have read about, such as clearing out caches, etc.

WRT to upgrading to MSIE 7 from MSIE 6, it is a good idea, but; until you
can get MSIE 6 to work at all, forget about upgrading. You need to get MSIE
working, and patched current *before* considering an upgrade. (And if you do
want to undertake an upgrade, make sure MSIE 6 is as "vanilla" as possible;
no toolbars, BHOs, or other add-ons).

That said, probably the first things you need to do are to get the version
info for both Windows XP and MS Internet Explorer.

This will explain how to get the System Information window displayed:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308549

A short way down the page one method given is: Click "Start", click "Run",
type "msinfo32.exe" in the "Open" box, and then click "OK".

From my System Information window:

| OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
| Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600

I highlighted the first two lines, then used the "Edit" menu to copy the
information to the clipboard, and paste in into this article.

After getting the OS version, you will need to get the MS Internet Explore 6
version information. I don't have MSIE 6 any more; but I think I recall that
the "Help | About" box had a field listing verious .dll files, and their
version numbers.

However, the Microsoft site offers this about getting the MSIE version
information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/164539

Once you have posted all of that, the experts will know how to proceed to
clear up your problems.

Hello,

Try running IE with add-ons disabled

Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced (tab) > UNCHECK "Enable
third-party browser extensions" > OK

Run IE6 now.

If it works now, one of your add-ons is causing the problem. Enable
third-party browser extensions in Internet
Options back.

Use this BHODaemon to manually disable add-ons that you don't need. You can
try disabling all and enabling them one by one to see which is the one
causing the problem you are experiencing

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjunction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
