Problems entering text in IE6 windows

Hi -- Recently purchased Dell desktop runs IE
6.0.2800.1106 etc etc. When I open a window to enter
text -- say, a remote email message from my office -- it
gets unstable; randomly the top window bar grays and I
can't type, or I hit a key and a menu pops up about
something unrelated, or I can't click the insertion point
without selecting a bunch of text...it drives me crazy!
Anyone had similar problems or has ideas?
