Rene Larive

In IE6, I very often get the mesage that Explorer cannot
reach the site from which I am trying to download
programs. This just happens now on sites with .exe. My
Internet security settings are at default values.

I have been having this problem since installing XP a
year ago.

Thanks for helping.

Hello Rene,

I'm using IE6 sp2 on winxp sp2 and I found the same problems downloading the
..exe file. Did you find how to solve the problem?

Thank you in advance for help

Hello Jon,

I tried to perform the steps you suggested but, also with a reboot, it
doesn't work.
When I try to download an exe file a message arrive telling that the site
is unreachable.

Thank you!

If it is a public site give a link so others can test it and get more ideas
from that one specifically.

In case it is an FTP site note that some users can avoid that symptom
by playing with FTP settings such as Use Passive FTP...

for example I cannot download firefox at this link
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox&os=win&lang=it-IT

What happens when you copy that to an IE Address bar and click Go?

How do you get a choice of mirror?

I am just immediately getting the following dialog:

Title: File Download - Security Warning
Bold: Do you want to run or save this file?
Icon: Cmd.exe
Normal text: Name: Firefox Setup 1.0.exe
Type: Application, 4.95 MB
From: download.sfc.wide.ad.jp
Buttons: Run Save Cancel
Icon: Windows Security Center
Normal text: While files from the internet can be useful,
this filetype can potentially harm your computer.
If you do not trust the source, do not run or save
this software.
Link title: What's the risk?

By using this link the download is from mirror.mcs.anl.gov and it doesn't
work.

So you probably saw that mirror in the From: section of the above dialog?
Were you given the above choices? Which choice did you make?
What happened exactly? Please give some details!
Remember, your words have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.

If I click on the page www.mozilla.org on the "free Donwload" the download
is from ftp.ale.org and it doesn't work

Apparently I went here:

http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox&os=win&lang=en-US

which immediately opened another dialog window exactly like the one
I detailed above except for these changes in the text:
Type: Application, 4.68 MB
From: ftp.uni-erlangen.de

Again, what did you try and what does "it doesn't work" entail?

If I try for instance this other link
ftp://pegasus.uni-mannheim.de/pegasus/winpmail/w32-421c.exe it works

Does that mean you don't care about the other cases now?

Thank you for help

You're welcome, happy to help.

BTW did you try to do anything with this suggestion:

When I read your reply I copied the link in order to answer to your question
and the window described by you below suddenly appeared. So I could download
the file. But I didn't memorised the name of the site. Then I tried again to
copy the link on the IE bar and this other window appeared (when I say
"doesn't work" it means that this window appears):

window appears with "world" icon on the left and the folder on the right and
a white page flying from the "world" to the "folder"
The window title is "File Download" (I've got the italian version of IE so I
have to translate and the words won't be exactly the same as you will see on
your IE)
"search of file information"
"firefox setup 1.0.exe from mozilla.mirrors.tds.net"
The status bar all with with no progress
Time left: "blank"
download in: "blank"
Speed of download: "blank"

check box named "close window after donload"

three button "open" "open folder" "cancel". The first two button are not
active

after some minutes this window is open, an error window appears:
Title "Microsoft Internet Explorer"
Impossible to download firefox setup 1.0.exe from mozilla.mirrors.tds.net
Impossible to open the internet site. Site not available or not found. Try
later

Botton "OK"

At this time I couldn't download the file

Then I tryed again and again and I began to understand that it depens on the
mirror choosen.
How do you get a choice of mirror?

I did not make any choice of the mirror. The mirror is apparently choosen
casually

Here I report a statistic of different mirrors found each trial:

mozilla.mirrors.tds.net the window described by me appears - Doesn't work
ftp-mozilla.netscape.com the window described by me appears - Doesn't work
download.sfc.wids.ad.jp the window described by you appears - It
works!
ftp.uni-erlangen.de the window described by you appears - It works!
mozilla.mirror.cygnal.ca the window described by you appears - It
works!
ftp.rz.tu-bs.de the window described by you appears - It works!
www.mirrorservice.org the window described by me appears - Doesn't work

I am just immediately getting the following dialog:

Title: File Download - Security Warning

I just only wanted to show you another case where the download works
I have had this download problem with .exe files since several months. And I
reported here some examples.

Wow! Looks as if there is a bug in the web interface that you are using.
The ampersand and last parameter label (for lang=it-IT) appear to have
been converted into a weird UNICODE "character".

FWIW the three characters I am seeing in its place (and their
equivalent helps in CharMap, Characterset Windows: Western) are:
â U+00E2 Latin Small Letter A With Circumflex
ΠU+0152 (0x8C) Latin Capital Ligature Oe
© U+00A9 Copyright Sign

(We may be able to take the bitstring implied by those concatenated
hex values to figure out the real Unicode character might be
to get some better clue about why it is happening.)

What do you see when you are looking at that link, one "character"
or three? Also what shows in the Status bar when you give the link focus?
More importantly, is that the link you were using or was it formatted correctly?
(It was after all just a repeat of the link that you had originally posted.)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie...wser&mid=9448ef1a-debb-4760-8666-a17f57f2a310

Hmm... I just checked the web interface copy of *my* post
and the link in it looks Ok. At the same time I checked the copy
of the link in yours and as expected I saw a single character
(a box character, implying that whatever that bitstring represents
is not a character in the characterset that I have.)

I think that the only thing that may concern you in all of this
is to watch for that problem if ever you are needing to use
links posted by someone using the web interface which contain
parameters called lang=. Bizarre!

When I read your reply I copied the link in order to answer to your question
and the window described by you below suddenly appeared. So I could download
the file. But I didn't memorised the name of the site. Then I tried again to

Excellent description! Thank you. That is much clearer now
than "doesn't work" was. In summary, then, it looks as if you
are seeing the download dialog that you would have seen if you
had first seen the download prompt (which I described) and
actually requested something with it?

I'm not sure what that would imply. I would prefer to see a packet
trace of it happening but I think one explanation might be that the
server is at fault. It might even be the case that there is a caching
server somewhere in the path which is responding incorrectly instead.
(There shouldn't be any caching because the download request
is essentially a query but who knows?)

Then I tryed again and again and I began to understand that it depens on the
mirror choosen.

Again, I think the best way of differentiating the two cases
and understanding the behaviour of the bad ones would be
to look at some traces and compare them.

I have had this download problem with .exe files since several months. And I
reported here some examples.

Ok. Sounds like you are getting a better understanding of the symptom.
It's unfortunate that you can't retry an individual mirror site reliably.
Getting a trace might help find a way to do that too.
Then you could see if toggling Passive mode FTP was the key
to making a "bad site" work better.

OTOH just toggling Passive mode and picking a random mirror
automatically could have these possible effects on your observations:
1. no change
2. complete reversal (e.g. ones which "worked" then don't)
3. partial reversal for the worse
4. major improvement
5. all downloads completely reliable

....
Where may I change the settings of the FTP client as suggested by you?

In the Options, Advanced tab, Browsing section. The one controlling
Passive FTP is near the bottom of that section.

Good luck

Yes. This one looks good.

Ok, I will pay attention!

I am going to start another subthread without this Unicode
distraction in it.

Unicode distraction confined to separate subthread.

Really, the window I see is not exactly the same that appears after
requesting the download in the window described by you. In the window I can
see there is "search of file information" that there isn't when the download
is running and the file is growing in the computer.

Ok. Let's get a trace of the packets then to see what the difference is.
Perhaps it is just an old-style download interface that isn't working
as well as the newer one.

....
If you think that this could help, please tell me the commands I have to
type in order to trace the packets

I use netcap to do the capturing. Netcap comes in the XP Pro Support
Tools which is on the XP Pro CD. Then I use Ethereal to format it.
Ethereal is freeware. It also has a capture component but I never figured
out how to use it transparently enough so that the act of tracing didn't affect
the thing I was tracing. YMMV.

Here is an excerpt from a previous post with more detailed instructions.
This particular reply was to someone who wanted to see NNTP packets
but the same procedure applies to the HTTP or FTP packets that you
want to look at.

<excerpt type="reply to Ethereal user">
Did you install WinPCap too?
Otherwise you will have to use netcap to do your capturing.

As I mentioned I prefer to use netcap to do the capturing anyway.
I usually start netcap from a command window.
I don't use it often enough so I have to check the syntax each time.

netcap /?

and as I mentioned it shows me the appropriate value to use
for my network adapter. E.g. the help gives me the clue
to enter

netcap /N:1

to start the trace and it is straightforward from there what to do
to stop it. When it stops it shows me where it wrote the .cap file.
Strangely the .cap file is given in 8.3 format but that really
doesn't matter because all I do is copy the whole string
(path and filename) to clipboard (e.g. use your mouse or
Alt-Space,E,k,Enter etc.), then switch to Ethereal, press Ctrl-o
and paste the saved full filename into Ethereal's input box.

There's probably a way to use Ethereal to limit it to just the
NNTP protocol but I haven't bothered trying to figure out how
so far. I usually just expand the protocol layer I'm interested in
or use the Contents of TCP Stream window
(e.g. via Follow TCP Stream Tools menu item.)

One thing it will help answer the question about is the timing.
You will see a relative timestamp associated with each packet
in the top pane and labeled by the highest level protocol each
contains.

See how you make out with the instructions so far and what
you can figure out yourself from the UI and the Help files.
</excerpt>

I'm going to have to back up and review what our objective
for doing this is going to be, apart from the interest of seeing
two different traces... ;)

Sounds like (below) that the answer to this was #1
but there is some doublechecking I think you should do too...

I checked the configuration and the toggle for "passive ftp" was already on.
I tried to disable the "passive ftp", ..., but no differencies! The bad sites
was still bad and the good was still good. Today there are more mirrors
availabe

Did you close iexplore.exe before making a final judgment about your test?
It's possible that that setting is one of the settings which should be labeled
(requires restart) but isn't. E.g., if it is and if you toggled it back the way
it was after only an immediate test which seemed to indicate "no change"
or if you haven't yet completely closed iexplore.exe nothing different on
ftp sessions may have happened yet.

With mozilla firefox browser I'm able to download without problems also from
"bad" mirrors

Aha! That's what you could compare with traces then. ;)

Good luck
