Hiya on the 27th I was asking about problems promoting a
domain. I spoke with Cary Shultz [A.D. MVP]
<[email protected]> over the issue and receive some good
advice.

Anyway it turned out that the problem was that the SRV
records were missing from the DNS, well now I find that
the machine that we promoted is named incorrectly this
can not be changed while the machine is a DC so I need to
demote it..

So I ran the dcpromo command and during the demotion
procees recived this error "The DSA operation is unable
to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure"

I'm thinking I may still be missing one or two SRV
records, can some one point me at a list so I can add
them to the DNS server by hand?

Thanks

Bart

from the command prompe: "net stop netlogon & net start netlogon" should
re-register all DNS records which are required by the Domain Controller.

Is the DNS server that your server is pointing to its self? also if you have
more then one domain controller (which you might) you need to ensure that
all the records for the other Domain Controllers are also registered, as the
DC will have to replicate off any changes it thinks it might have along with
transfering any FSMO role holders to this other DC.

We are running bind 9.x.x on a solaris box, active
updates are turned off, I have to hand configure the SRV
records...

So I need a list of the needed SRV records.

Ahh in that case, net stop netlogon & net start netlogon and open up the
%windir%\system32\config\netlogon.dns file, that will contain all the
records that need to be registered in DNS
