I have an XP PC and a Win 2K PC that will not see each
talk to each other on my network. They CAN ping each
other, but I cannot connect them through the browser.
When got the Start -> Run route and enter the URL of the
other PC, I get an error saying that the network is not
accessible. Any suggestions??

Thanks,
Bill

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers. Got File- and printersharing loaded?

1. Make sure all user accounts on each computer exist on both computers.
2. Make usre at leat one resource (folder, printer) is shared on each
computer.
3. Try Start > Run "\\<machine_Name>" (no quotes,brackets).

Marina,

Thanks for your suggestion.

All PC's are on the same workgroup. The 2 PC's that are
having trouble 'seeing' one another DO have the same user
accounts. File and printersharing is on on both PC's.

Bill

Mike,

Thanks for your suggestions.

1. I changed the available user accounts on both machines
so that they are identical. No change in the problem.
2. Each PC DOES have folders set for sharing.
3. When I try the Start -> Run route, I get the
message, "Network path not found.

Got Netbios over TCP/IP enabled? On the Advanced properties of TCP/IP, tab
WINS.

Marina

Mariana,

Thanks for hanging in there with me.

I do have Netbios enabled on both PC's. I tried that
yesterday. That did not provide a solution.

Bill

Bill,

It is no problem to post them here. But if you still insist, take out the
no....spam-part.

The Problem
All PC's will ping every other PC.
The following PC's will browse ALL other PC's:
.. The Server
.. WS1

The Inspiron8000 will browse all other PC's except the
Dell46. The Dell46 does not even show up in the browser
as a PC on the network. If I go Start -> Run and enter
\\Dell46, I get this message ("The network path was not
found.)

The Dell46 will browse all PC's on the network except the
Insprion8000. In the browser, however, the Inspiron8000
does appear, but I get this error message (\\Inspiron8000
is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions. The
network path was not found.) when attempting to access.

Thanks so much.

Hi Bill,

At first look, the ipconfigs look fine, except for the DNS-servers. I'm
assuming you're using a router and that should take care of DNS too. In that
case DNS should be pointing to your router-IP (192.168.1.1).
But that hasn't got anything to do with the browsing.

Check again please if the XP has got file- and printersharing loaded and
that the firewall is turned off. Make sure you've shared a folder on that
and try to get access from another machine.
Do the same with the W2K Inspiron.

If that is not going to help, open the commandprompt on the XP and W2K
Inspiron and type
net share
Do you see the IPC$, C$ and ADMIN$-shares?
Now type: net view
You should be seeing all machines.

Marina

Mariana,

I am using a router, which is connected to a 16-port
switch. My access to the Internet is via a cable modem
connected to the router. All PC's can access the Internet
fine.

I have double checked the file and printer sharing and it
is loaded for both machines. Each machine has at least
one folder set for sharing. The firewall on XP box is off.

The problem seems to be with the W2K Inspiron. The PC
named, "Server" is also running W2K and it CAN browse and
be browsed by the XP box. The WS1 (Win98) box can browse
and be browsed by both the XP and the W2K Inspiron.
Here are the results of the net share/ net view
executions:

For the XP desktop:
Share Name Resource Remark
C$ C:\ Default Share
ADMIN$ c:\Windows Remote Admin
IPC$ Remote IPC
C C:\
SharedDocs C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents

In Net View, the XP box can see all other PC's

For the W2K Inspiron:
Share Name Resource Remark
C$ C:\ Default Share
ADMIN$ C:\Windows Remote Admin
IPC$ Remote IPC
C_Dell8000 C:\

In Net View, the W2K Inspiron can see all other PC's
on the network EXCEPT the XP desktop.

The W2K Inspiron seems to be the rude one. The XP desktop
can 'see' the Inspiron, but can't talk. The Inspiron
will not even recognize the XP.

Thanks again for your faithful dedication to this problem.

Later,

BIll

On the XP, is the service computer Browser running? Is the TCP/IP Netbios
Helper service running?
