I am attempting to boot the WinPE from disk 1 of xp
embedded toolkit.
The boot gets so far, then I get a blue screen with
following :-

STOP: c0000135 {unable to locate component}
this application has failed to start because winsrv was
not found. Re-installing the application may fix this
problem.

Any ideas?

Paul,

My guess is 2 possibile reasons. The first and most obvious is that the CD
is damaged, try to boot it from another system with a different chipset and
see if you get the same results. The second, and the reason why I said a
different chipset earlier, is that WinPE could possibly be loading disk
controller drivers that aren't exactly appropriate for the hardware that
exists in your system. You could also try adding a PCI disk controller if
you have one handy, and see if it loads the correct drivers. HTH,

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the info.
I'm sure the CD is OK as it works on another system (which
has a different chipset). Unfortunately, I don't have a
PCI disk controller I can try. I will talk to the CPU card
manuafacturer (Ampro) to see if they have run into similar
problems. Is there any documentation which describes which
hardware WinPE is compatible with?

Paul,

You can get more documentation on WinPE in the XP Pro OPK. Contact your MS
rep about getting the OPK. It comes in the multi-packs for OEM XP Pro as
well. HTH,
