Problems AFTER applying security updates

S

Sue

Hi. Last night, on my home computer, I applied several
security updates that (according to that little icon in
the bottom right of my screen) said needed to be installed.

After that, after the update I can't access my computer
now. I am able to log in . . . it takes about 20 minutes
to recognize my login and then it takes forever for the
screen to load.

I want to reinstall windows2000 over my existing
windows2000 in an effort to return to where I was and so
that I can save my data.

Is it possible to install windows2000 over the existing
windows2000 and then to access the computer again?

I sure appreciate your help.

Thank you

Sue

As long as you do an upgrade when re-installing, your
files stay intact and the OS goes back to the orginal way
before the updates.

Why don't you try uninstalling the update via Add\Remove
programs? Go into event view\system log file and verify
which update was installed and then remove it.

It sounds like you have hit the dreaded problem with update
835737 which almost kills many Win 2000 machines. The good
news is that you can (very slowly) uninstall the update
without reinstalling Windows, from Control Panel -
Add/Remove Programs. The bad news is that this leaves you
wide open to the Sasser worm, whose authors no doubt
noticed in April that Microsoft had publicised a security
hole without plugging it properly.

There is supposed to be a fix for the problem with update
835757, see KB article 841382
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=841382),
but for some unclear reason Microsoft will give this only
to people who send in their credit card details.

I had the same problem. I followed the steps below (from
another users group) and it worked for me:

After installing Security fix KB835732, the SYSTEM.exe
procress uses up 99% of CPU time, and make the system non-
responsive.

To unistall it, I did the following
(1) Boot into Safe mode.
(2) Run TaskManager - and noticed that the SYSTEM process
was using 99% of the CPU time.
(3) From TaskManager set the Priority of the EXPLORER
process to REALTIME, so that I can get to the control
panel.
(4) Run ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM from control panel.
(5) Go back to TaskManager and set the Priority of
MSHTA.exe to REALTIME, so that the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM can
get some CPU time.
(6) Select and Remove "Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB835732".
(7) Go back to TaskManager and set the Priority
of "SPUNIST.exe" to REALTIME, for the uninstall program to
run.
(8) Wait a few minutes, and the uninstall program will
eventually ask you to click FINISH to reboot the machine.
It took a long time for the system to shutdown and I just
unplugged the power.
(9) The machine should become normal after reboot.

I believe you just have to uninstall KB835732..if this was
the last patch you applied.
