Naming information can not be located because:
The Server is not operational.
Contact your system administrator to verify that your
domain is properly configured and is currently online.

Well the server is fine I can attach to it ping it print.
Add new clients. Any ideas?

Most likely a DNS problem. Check and be sure that the computer is using your
local DNS. When you get the error, the MMC should still come up. If you
right-click on the Top-Level (where it say "Active directory users and
computers") you should be see an option to connect to a specific Domain or a
specific Domain Controller. Try that option.

yeah its getting its info via dhcp from that server and
the server is the dns server. I can pull up active
directory users and computers with noproblems on the
server its self. There is only one 2k server on active
directory thats operating as a domain controller. From the
other servers i can not create the ad snap-in either.
Which concerns me, because at some point im going to want
to add them as dc's. One thing I did notice is that on the
dc its full computer name is lets say server.pacbell.net
and the domain is hq.ourcompany.com. which doesnt seem
right.
