Problems Accessing This Newsgroup

I'm having problems accesing these newsgroups using Internet Explorer here at
work (Version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.050301-1526). I will come to the newsgroups
in the morning and view various forums under English>Office>Access with no
problems. When I come back in the afternoon and restart Explorer and navigate
to my selections every one of them says, "Sorry - Page is temporarily
unavaiable". I've found the only way to get Explorer to work again so I can
view the newsgroups at this website is to delete the following cookies.

support.microsoft.com
microsoft.com
passport.com

This requires me to sign in every time I want to post or reply to postings.
Today, I also found that while I could now view the newsgroups, when I
clicked on New to create a new posting that nothing happened. So I am having
to post this message with that "other" popular browser. Any ideas on exactly
why I am having this problem? Is this because I am behind my companies
firewall perhaps? I have no problem posting at a multitude of other technical
forums, only this one when using IE6. Any help, insight or direction would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It may very well be a firewall issue and cookies not being allowed to be
kept. You *might* try the remember you option but there's another option if
you have newsgroup access from work:

Access MS Newsgroups :

Roger, it's much easier to use outlook express or some other newsreading
program.

If you'd like to try here is the link to this group (or at least one link
that works).

This will just leave you to fill in a few details - suggest you do NOT use a
real email address, (e-mail address removed) would be good enough since
..invalid is automatically routed to a "Black hole".

news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

and to the IE group

news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser

Hope this helps if you can go this route.

Galen,

Thanks for the excellent reply. I hope you don't mind, but I have two quick
questions for you in connection with your reply.

1. How would I know if I have access to newsgroups here where I work? I
assume IT would know, but they might not be so quick to tell me or want me to
know.

2. How can you use Outlook Express (as indicated in your ling to G3
Solutions website) for newsgroup browsing without messing up getting your
email in the full version of Outlook which we use here at work?

Thanks so much for your input, and I hope you can help me out with these
questions. Take care.

Try it and see? As long as you have port 113 open you should be all set and
you likely do. I find that it's normally open unless someone made it a point
to close it. While a security view says that's not a very good idea, I can
say that it's a good idea in your case.

Just don't setup Outlook Express to do the mail, only add a news account. I
think you'll find that you like it a LOT better than using the web
interface. There's more to do and it's easier and faster. If anything your
employers might be more happy to allow newsgroup access as it's much faster
than using the CDO/web interface.

Thanks so much for your input, and I hope you can help me out with
these questions. Take care.

Galen,

It works! I setup Outlook Express as you outlined here at work and now have
access to the Microsoft Newsgroups. This is great. Is there any benefit to
using another newsreader program like Forte's FreeAgent? Or is Outlook
Express really the way to go? Let me know, and thanks so much for your help,
I really appreciate it.

Forte's not bad but, I'm a slacker... I use OE... Have for ages... I've
tried the other apps... I always come "home" to OE though... For all her
bugs and weaknesses she does exactly what I want most of the time. Kind of
like a good hunting dog that runs off once in a while to chase chickens or
some sort of analogy like that.

Galen,

Thanks so much for the input, I'm going to stick with OE for now. I really
appreciate all of your help with this problem I had. Take care.
