Hi,
Hopefully someone out there will be able to give me a few ideas, as
unfortunately my boss has decided I'm in charge of the computers. It
turns out I'm slightly less clueless than anyone else here.
Anyway, here's the background: We had a network installed (by a '70s
LSD victim) consisting of an ASDL line, going to a Lucent Cell pipe,
which then goes into a Trendnet TE100-S16plus 16-port 10/100M NWay Fast
Ethernet Switch. This then feeds a number of computers running Windows
2000 Pro. As far as I'm aware there is no server.
We recently had a new phone system installed. It runs off an ISDN line.
The phone box connects to the Trendnet and one of the computers has
been used to run the phones' voicemail system. The day after this was
installed several of the computers lost access to the internet. They
still seem to communicate with the network.
After a bit of investigating I noticed that the two computers that were
still fully functioning had their IP and Default Gateway and DNS
settings set statically. The others were set to automatic. After
copying the settings across (with the last digits of the IP address
changed) I got the other two computers being used that day working.
However, one of these had a severe crash recently (I think due to too
much rubbish being installed on it) and I formatted the drive. On
reloading Windows and using the same settings it no longer sees the
internet. Another computer that wasn't being used but now is also won't
connect.
If anyone has any ideas of how to sort this, or even just further
avenues to explore I would be very grateful. Of course, the company
that installed the phone system deny any responsibility/knowledge and
won't help! Thanks for reading!
