After downloading a movie or video clip I am unable to
watch it. I am new to all this so I am probably doing
something quite silly. Playing downloaded music seems to
be ok as long as it is mp3. Also, how do I play a video
clip that has been downloaded as a dat file.
I really would appreciate some help.Thanks.
A video clip appearing as a dat file is possibly just not quite finished
downloading yet. You can view incomplete movie downloads, which is handy
for verifying if it's a genuine file you're downloading for instance, with
AVI Preview:
http://www.avipreview.com/avipreview.htm If the download
really is complete but still appears with a .dat extension, I believe
(somebody correct me if I'm wrong) that you can just rename it to .avi and
it will play.
Some downloaded movies, particularly when downloaded via Kazaa, are fakes
and contain no video at all, but the genuine movies all require video codecs
for you to view them. GSpot
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ will identify
the required codec and tell you if you've already got it installed. If you
don't, a quick Google search will help you locate it. Windows Media Player
only automatically downloads Microsoft codecs, so you will probably have to
search and install the one(s) you need manually.
