Hi! i got a problem,

i build a computer for a friend
AMD athlon 3800+
xfx 6800 GT
asrock vsta v5( i tought)
and the problem a really cheap case...

and since im not the smartest i forget the placeholders while
installing...
so i turned the computer on for the first time and the house went out
(lights went out) , the power suply died... but i had another
laying around putted it in and this i tought about the placeholders
and it went on
no screen.... i resseted cmos i had screen everything went well i
installed and left.

next day my friend calls me.. he says i have a blue screen i watched
on his computer and i couldn't find nothing real serious

here is the story he only had the bsods with world of warcraft on his
highest graphics , he had no lag or anything but he got like 3
bso'd's a day. i ran memtest nothing.

i replaced the harddisk with a new one with a new windows and now he
gets freezes. and still bsod's with WoW on high does anyone have an
idea?

thanks in advance

Yeah...you've ****ed it. Memtest won't show up an intermittent fault on
the motherboard or with the graphics card.

From your post, you're the last person on earth who should be let near
the insides of a PC.

There's an old saying: "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing".

First problem
AMD athlon 3800+
xfx 6800 GT

asrock? Second problem
and the problem a really cheap case...

Normally NOT a problem
and since im not the smartest i forget the placeholders while
installing...

Third problem
so i turned the computer on for the first time and the house went out
(lights went out) , the power suply died... but i had another

Well yes, after you fried the junk mainboard, which is REALLY junk now
no screen.... i resseted cmos i had screen everything went well i
installed and left.

I'm surprised you got it running at all
next day my friend calls me.. he says i have a blue screen i watched

Not surprising
here is the story he only had the bsods with world of warcraft on his

bso'd's a day. i ran memtest nothing.

well no, memory is probably fine
i replaced the harddisk with a new one with a new windows and now he

idea?

Well, you could start by replacing the mainboard that you most definitely
fried. Then pray like heck that you didn't fry the CPU and video card, as
well. -Dave

Well not withstanding the bungling of this build one thing I would suggest
is looking at the graphics card. Some of the newer high end cards have
several issues. Some of cards have temp issues and shut down under heavy
graphics loads. The newer cards also draw *ssloads of current. The power
supply needs to be sized appropriately to provide enough current. Also
make sure all of the correct power connectors are connected to the graphics
card. Most require 1-2 connectors into the card.

I would look at an underpowered power supply.

and since im not the smartest i forget the placeholders while
What's placeholders? Does he mean standoffs?

SteveH

That's the way I read it, and it fits, in context of everything else he
tried to write. :) That is, he screwed the motherboard to the case, with
traces sitting on bare metal. Ouch. That's a bit like shorting two wires
of a lamp cord together, and then plugging it in. -Dave

TBH, I'm surprised the only problem is BSOD's

Except this is hardly a high end graphics card by modern standards. If I
were him I would also try making sure WOW is fully patched and try changing
the NVidia driver for an earlier one. But lets be honest here, the
likelihood of something being bolloxed on the mobo/cpu/video are pretty
good.

SteveH

Yeah, I'm surprised he only had to dick around with the CMOS a bit to get
the system to boot.

It could be a troll, I guess. :) -Dave

Yup, I'd put that likelihood somewhere around 100% or so. :) -Dave

I would agree too and I find it rather amazing everything powered up
somewhat nominally after putting a new power supply in. The highest
likelihood that some components are fuxored after the power issues but I'm
throwing out something to check that doesn't involved fried components.
What are the chances the power supply he had laying around is a low wattage
model incapable of powering everything at heavy load?

Pretty high. But at best, I think changing the PSU again would be like
fixing a flat tire on a car with a blown engine. :) -Dave

You appear to know just enough to be dangerous.

It might be that the system is still OK,.
The electric short was very short, and might be that it only dmaged the PSU.
As you write he only get blue screens with WOW, right ? in this case I'd
suspect a driver issue, but it also might be that the GPU burned and it
can't hanle high load.
Try some other intensive games and see if they work well, or do you get blue
screens/other articfacts.

My vote goes on the P/S
""happened to have..another laying around .." sounds antique & small.
The M.Board may well be OK ...the short to case from fitting straight
on top of the base plate likely stopped any power getting in to any of the
MB.
