Here's the scenario. My computer is off.
That is, I am not online. I hear it come on from across
the room. I come over to look at it and see that it
registers that I'm on-line! In the lower right hand
corner, covering 1/4 of the whole screen is a box that
tells me that somebody can take control of my computer and
that "somebody" knows about my total computer use. That I
should follow their directions and my problem will be
solved. I think they call themselves "Soap". There is no
way to move the box, no way to respond to it (such as
a "next") and no way to X it out. In order to get rid of
it, I have to turn off my computer. This act keeps
occuring. I can't understand how someone could put me
online like that. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

If you are on a cable/dsl connection then you may still be online even if you
have closed your browser. I suggest that you run a virus scan on your computer
using the latest definitions and also run a parasite scanner/remover such as
SpyBot Search and Destroy. In addition be sure to use a firewall [there are free
ones available for personal use such as Zone Alarm, Kerio, and Sygate ], a
quality antivirus program that will scan your emails also, and keep your
critical updates at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
current. You may be able to use Task Manager the next time it happens to
identify the offending process and select end process tree to end it. You would
have to make a note of what processes are running when that message is not
showing or try ALT F4 to close it until you are able to get rid of it. If it is
a gray popup box, then your computer is responding to messages via the messenger
service from the internet which would indicate you need a firewall. --- Steve
