I keep getting Access denied on one machine - I have
updated many more machines with no problem. I looked at
article 873148 and it says that a registry entry has the
wrong permissions but have not had any luck finding what
registry entry is blocking the update. Any ideas?

I have encountered the same problem. The update reaches
the point where it is updating the registry, then dies. A
check of the svcpack.log and setupapi.log files yield
little information as to the registry entry that is denied
access.

I did note that the directory (which changes with each
attempt) that the set up is running from is one that
is "access denied". I tried editing the security on that
directory to give myself access, but that still didn't
resolve the problem.

Hi

This one might be relevant:

Updates from the Windows Update Web site are not installed and an
"Error 0x80070005: Access is denied" error message is logged to the
Windows Update.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836926

Note that other registry keys than the one mentioned in the article
above also can have permission issues. More about this under the
"Access denied" section here:

You will need to enable Verbose logging to see what registry key
is giving you a problem (see link above).
