Problem with XP: generic host message, freezing up

Please can anyone offer some help - everytime I start my PC it freezes up
then displays an error message 'generic host process for win32 services has
encountered an error and needs to close.'
From this error message I get more info:

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : ntdll.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.2180 offset : 000122ba

then more info:

C:\DOCUME~1\Joe\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd9dd.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Joe\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd9dd.dir00\appcompat.txt

I tried many things: updating drivers, run Ccleaner to check the registry,
checked for Malware, Virus, uninstalling xp service pack 3... Is there there
anything else I can try?

After I clicked through the above error messages the taskbar appears to
crash, then re-appears but with reduced graphics (grey colour)

I'm extremely grateful for any help, this problem is about to drive me
crazy!!!
 
I forgot to add, I checked 'event viewer' in 'control panel' from here I get
the following error message:

First - how are your backups? Bring them to current!

Do you have any trouble when in Safe mode?

Gut reaction is video card driver - perhaps motherboard chipset.

Boot into Safe Mode - use the computer there. Everything okay?
Boot into Safe Mode with Networking - use the computer there. Everything
okay?

If the above works - locate the latest version of all the drivers for each
hardware component in the machine and install them. Not from Microsoft
updates - it is unlikely Microsoft made your motherboard, your sound device
(although possible - not probable - as it would be fairly old), your video
device and your network device(s). Get the updated drivers from the actual
manufacturer's support and downloads web pages.

You'll also want to scan the hard disk drive for errors. Maybe use the hard
disk drive manufacturer's diagnostics utility (usually found on the
manufacturer's support/downloads section of their web site for download) to
scan the drive/controller for errors.

You may also want to scan the memory for errors.

Also - in the end - you might need to do a in-place (repair) installation of
the OS - so you really should (if you have not already) integrate SP3 into
your Windows XP installation media so you can do a proper repair
installationj if it become necessary to ensure you have uncorrupted versions
of your system files.
