Problem with XP and Modems

My friend has just purchased a new PC running XP with SP2 installed. I have
been helping set it up and have a problem connecting to his ISP. The modem
connects to the internet and message is displayed saying that it is. The
icon comes up in the system tray and says the speed connected and reports
that some bytes have already been exchanged. However neither IE6 or OE will
establish a connection with the ISP server and behave as if off line.

I have taken this problem to the ISP who have blamed the modem. (Yes, that's
a first. :)) I have checked that the ISP setup data is correct. I have
checked the Microsoft site in case there is a fix but cannot find one.

Coincidently, I have a similar problem with my own machine. The same thing
happens however there is a difference. I can get on to the ISP after booting
up however, after being online and closing the connection, my computer
behaves exactly like the computer above. I have to reboot to go online
again.

I'm at my wit's end. Any solution to this problem will potentially save
lives. Please help.

Have you set IE to connect through the modem?.. TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS -
connections tab..

Yes, Mike, the setup has been done, the modem says that it is online when a
connection is done, the modem icon is in the system tray and right clicking
on it tells me it is receiving some bytes. When OE and IE6 are loaded
however, they display all the signs of being offline.

I should have mentioned that in both cases the MS firewall is turned off. I
have another firewall in my computer but that also does not solve the
problem when turned off.

I have a similar problem.

As it happens I have two computers here at home, both running XP. On
one of these I installed XP today over '98. In that one, I am unable
to establish a connection either for the Microsoft activation site, or
for either of the two ISPs I connect to. For both of these last two,
I have been able to connect with my other machine, using identical
parameters.

I hear the modem dial, and then the remote modem enter into discussion
with mine over capabilities. This takes place normally, and then the
speaker switches off, with the connection established. The connection
window informs me that the name and password are being sent, and after
about 15 seconds or so, the line is dropped.

I should add that with the same modem and Win 98, I was able to
connect without problems to both ISPs.

I've opened a comms box to see what was transmitted and saw two sets
of unintelligible text, one as soon as the sound stops, and the other
some 4-6 seconds later, I can't tell what they are or what they do,
Can anyone suggest a possible solution please.

If you set up your connection manually, you may have to tell IE6 what
connection you are using

Mike, IE6 in Tools/Internet Options/Connections shows the correct modem and
set up being used. Really, there is no change in the settings that I can see
from when first booting up and a successful connection is established to the
second attempt where I get on but both IE6 and OE cannot establish a link.

You didn't say, but I assume you are talking about a dial-up 56k modem.
My dial-up ISP must have the MTU set at no higher than 576. If it is
set higher, everything looks normal, it dials, makes connection, does
verification, etc. but, it will never connect to any internet site, it
just sits there. Check what MTU WinXP is using and if it is 1500, try
changing it to 576.

Good luck, jimbo

An interesting suggestion. Given that the modem does connect from bootup but
not following a previous connection without rebooting, I suspect it doesn't
apply but I will check it out. Thank you.
