Problem with XLS files

Dr Zoidberg

I've also asked in the office newsgroup , but thought I'd give here a go
incase it was something windows specific.

One of the laptops here is running Office 97 on Windows 2000 and has a very
odd problem I've not seen before.

If you open Excel , then File - Open and browse to a file , either locally
or on the network
you can open it fine.
If on the other hand you find the file through windows explorer or just
browse to it on your local machine then double click it won't open
correctly.
Excel fires up ok then gives you an error message saying that it could not
locate the file or one of its components.
Word documents open correctly , from all locations , this seems to be
confined to just Excel.
Any sugestions?

- Did you check if the problem is specific to Excel files
that have names with embedded spaces? Or are located
in a folder with embedded spaces?
- Can you open Word documents that have embedded spaces?

The folder does have an embedded space and many of the files do.
What do you suspect?

Before I try to answer your question I need to know if the
problem still occurs for a file such as c:\test.xls.

Jut created a new workbook , saved it to desktop then tried to open it from
there and got the same error.
Using File - open caused no problem.

I suggest you try solution 5 in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;200915

If this does not work, try the other solutions. If they do not work,
try this one:
or: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;177248

I suspect you might have the same problem with your other MS Office
products. See if you can open any Word files that have embedded
spaces in the file/folder name.

Ah , found the problem
Knowledge base article Q296055.
Just needed to re-register Excel apparently.
