Problem with Word since latest security updates.

I'm running XP Home with Service Pack 2 and Office 97.
I downloaded the latest 6 security updates this week and shortly afterwards
created a new Word document and tried to save it.
The "save as" dialog box did not appear and the hourglass appeared instead.
Nothing further happened.
(Re-saving an existing Word document works fine).
I had to ctrl/alt/delete and stop Word running.
I suspected one of the security updates was to blame, so I did a system
restore. Word then worked correctly.
I then downloaded the updates again and the same problem occurred.
I've now gone back on to system restore.
Does anyone know if this is a general problem? (why not check your own
computer and see what happens if you try to save a new Word document?)
I'd be grateful for any info.
Regards,
George

The above should have read "Office 2000".

you can do the following if you’ve been affected by MS06-015:

- (If you have multiple user accounts set up) Log onto the computer using an
account with Administrator privileges

- Click the Start button, then click Run and type "regedit" at the prompt,
without the quotes; this will start Registry Editor

- Locate the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached key in Registry Editor

- Right click on the key and select New / DWORD Value

- Rename the resulting value
"{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
0x401", without the quotes

- Right click the value, select Modify, and type "1" into the Value Data
field

- Close Registry Editor

Hi George,

I am experiencing the same problem.

I have been mucking about with it all day, with no success. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the office professional...this didn't work! The
error is still there.
My computer will not allow a system restore!

Becoming demented..... can anyone help!!!! Please!!!

Hi Larry,

thank you very much for replying to my message requesting help.

I have tried the fix, but it doesn't seem to help the problem.

I am completely in the dark with computer workings.....

I notice that there is still another

re Dword file in there

it starts with

750FDFOE-2A26-11D1.....

Is this a problem?

thanks
Regards Allison
