Problem with Windows Update

When I go to the Windows Update site, it is unable to scan
my computer. Therefore it can't tell me which updates I
need, allow me to download them, or install them. This
has been a problem for several months now. It would be
nice to be able to get the updates.

Windows version? Any errors (displayed or in Windows Update.log)?

Have you waded through Windows Update Troubleshooter

....tried disabling your anti-virus application?
