Problem with windows explorer

When I right clik the start button ig gat a message
saying 'Windows explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close' The info link points to kernal32.dll as
the problem.
I have bought and used the Registry Mechanic and also
used the Stinger programme but these have failed to
correct my problem.
I am running XP Version 5 with service pack 1 and have
taken all the recent MS updates. My About Windows box
shows that I have 163.312KB of physical memory available
to windows. I have the PC-Cillen 2002 (Updated) virus
checker and firewall and believe my system is free of
viruses
Any ideas?

Thanks for the link but unfortunately it did not help as
this problem does not appear to be linked with any
software other than XP.
Would re installing XP solve this?

.A reinstall would be a certain fix but a Repair Install
might be enough. Have XP CD and CD KEY Ready...
In your Bios change Boot order to CDROM first and your
hard drive second. Exit out saving change and with your
XP Install disk in the CDRom Restart your computer. You
will get Press Any Key.......Message, do so. "To set up
Windows now" press Enter and when you get
a "Welcome....' on the screen after you read the EULA
press F8. It tells you all this on the screen as your
going along so pay attention to it....When you have
selected Windows XP as your Current installation
press "R" for Repair. Keep up with what you are
instructed.
When your Repair is completed make sure and turn your
Windows XP I.C. Firewall on first thing. I would also
install a run AntiVirus as what messed you up might still
be around. Hopefully the repair works as your files
should still be there and you can get to work cleaning
house and getting things right again. These or this one
anyway is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove
specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-
virus protection, but rather a tool to assist
administrators and users when dealing with an infected
system.

Thanks for the help but a repair install took an hour and
failed to do the job. Still have the same fault. I guess
I will have to go for a complete re-install but will hold
fire incase you have any better ideas. Thanks again. John
