Hi,

Recently, when I tried to restore my computer to its earliest state using
Windows XP Restore, my computer was restored to a point well after the
earliest state, despite my making sure to set restore points whenever I
installed programs (if the computer had not done so automatically.

I'd much appreciate any advice as to what might have gone wrong.

Sincerely,

Restore Points are dynamic. As new restore Points are created, the oldest
points are deleted to maintain the proper amount of space allocated on the
hard drive. Look up System Restore in Help and Support for a good overview
of this process. System Restore is for emergency purposes only and should
not be confused with a full backup program.

Thanks for the reply. Is there any way to increase the amount of space
allocated on the hard drive, beyond the default maximum amount?

Yes, but you need to be careful when changing these settings. If you have
set the maximum amount in the System Restore/Settings in Control Panel and
still want more space allocated, you can increase this. It requires a
registry edit to accomplish. First read the following KB article:

The Registry Keys and Values for the System Restore Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=295659

The article states that you can change the allocated space by changing the
DSMax value in this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore

Go to this registry key and double click the DSMax value. In the Edit dialog
box, click the Decimal radio button and in the Value Data line, type in the
amount you want. The decimal number will show the value in MB. Typing in
1024 will give you 1GB of allocated space, 2048 will give you 2GB, etc.
