I had this problem previously and with help from a list member, was able to
fix the problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the instructions.

When I click on an email link on a web site, I get the following error
message:

"Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not
properly installed.

I checked and Windows Mail is my default mail program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Click on the orb, then Default Programs, then Set your default programs,
them Windows Mail, then Set this program as default. You may not
have all of its defaults set.

Hi quest,

Follow these steps:

Click Start, select Default Programs
Click Set program access and computer defaults
Click Custom, and select Windows Mail
Click OK

Then, follow these steps:

Click Set your default programs
Select your mail client from the list
Click Set this program as default
Click OK

I have exactly the same problem; and the suggestions don't work for me.

Anybody have other suggestions?

Type or paste the following into a Command Prompt and hit Enter:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" OCInstallReinstallOE

(include the quotation marks)

Then reboot. Let us know if it helped.

I did what is suggested (more than once). All of the defaults appear to be
set correctly. However, I (once again) went through each step . . . but
still have the same problem.

Thank you for the suggestion, but that didn't help either. :-(

Sorry to hear that. Your remaining options are a bit drastic:

You can try a repair install of Vista:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html
This will replace system files, but is not supposed to affect data.

Another option is to abandon Windows Mail and switch to Windows
Live Mail. It will automatically import your WM accounts, settings,
folders and emails.

It's not obvious which specific suggestion you used.
Try once more, using the illustrated guide shown here:

IT WORKS IT WORKS thank you!

You might try 'resetting' IE. Go to its Tools, Internet Options, Advanced,
and click the Reset button.

I am wondering if the problem is with my IE. I am able to use the "mailto"
links when I use Firefox. Are there any settings in IE that I need to
adjust?

Thanks again,

Karima
