Problem with VM after SP4 install

I installed SP4 using automatic updates, on my PII 350
with 384 mb of ram, and when I try to use any site that
needs java (eg Pogo), or I try to install the next
security updates, which include VM updates, I get the
following message.

"The Microsoft VM you are attempting to install is a
protected system component and can only be updated with a
later release of the operating system or service pack."

I've tried Knowledge Base until I'm blue in the face, but
each item leads back to a patch, which when I try it, just
terminates with this same message.

Can anyone help?? Thanks .... Darryl

Here's some info for you:

Your best bet is to get your JRE from Sun:

Thanks WD .... I've already been to the 820101 page, read
it till blue, tried to install the 816093 patch they refer
to, still get the same message as I first described. I
thought about using Sun Java, but when I try to remove the
Microsft Java first, I get the same message again ....
right now, it appears that Win 2000 or the Windows File
Protection software (WFP), think I'm running an older
version of the OS. 820101 says the VM is not WF Protected
under SP4, but I wish someone would tell my OS that.

No need to remove the Microsoft VM. Just install the Sun JRE. It's
pretty simple.

And you read the ReadMe for SP4 BEFORE you started the update?
AFAIR it clearly states that the MSJVM needs to be updated BEFORE
(with hotfix 816093). Since the MSJVM is a component of W2K and
protected by SFC it can only be updated by this hotfix which but
refuses to install on SP4.

Try harder next time.

If you install the SUN JRE be prepared to not get things to work right on
Pogo unless they have fixed it. Used to be the Sun JRE worked better than
the MS JVM but then after Pogo did a maint. window sometime last year the
best I could get a computer with the Sun JRE to go was a few games and then
things started to hang and be very sluggish. Downloaded the MS JRE from the
Support pages on Pogo and installed it and all was well (this was when MS
was barred from offering their JVM any further because of a court case, they
have since kissed and made nice with Sun).

Hello,
I installed SP4 using automatic updates, on my PII 350
with 384 mb of ram, and when I try to use any site that
needs java (eg Pogo), or I try to install the next
security updates, which include VM updates, I get the
following message.

If the MS Java VM is installed (version 5.0.3805 or so) and you only
want to update the VM to version 5.0.3810 ...
.... go to the Windows-Update-Site. The update only works online.

If you have no VM installed, use this link to download the VM directly:
http://www.download.support.safetec.net/msjavx86/msjavx86.exe

After it -> update via 'Windows-Update-Site'.
This was my workaround a few weeks ago.
