Problem with Vista

I've just recently bought a new computer with 2GB RAM and 2.40GHz processor
and I bought a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium too. I installed Vista with
no problems whatsoever and started updating my antivirus and visited the
Windows Update site until it was completely updated and I've started to
notice going into my second week of using Vista that it has slowed down
dramatically and by this I mean from gaming to just browsing the internet. It
takes a minimum of 10-20 seconds just to open up Internet Explorer! Is there
anything I can do to fix the performance?

hey, answer to your question

Mine use to run well and then went down hill and back up hill. It seems to
be all the svchost that slow the computer down. Does it with mine alot.

Might not help but hey.

Is there anything I can do to speed it up? I've tried running a virus/spyware
scan and it came up with nothing. I've also defragged twice and run CCleaner
but it does nothing it thinks that it is running perfectly normal with no
problems. :/

What software have you installed since you installed the system? What
anti-virus do you have?

I'm currently using Norton 360. There hasn't been many things installed since
Vista was put on apart from games and updates.

Shawn,

Remove Norton 360 and use a different security application, other than
McAfee. Norton/Symantec and McAfee have a history of causing more problems
than they solve. My advice comes from personal experience. I would suggest
the free Avast or AVG, or better yet, NOD 32.

If you still have performance problems, disable the software you have added,
one at a time, and see if you notice any differences in your computer's
performance. It is possible one of the applications you installed is not
compatible with Vista.

You need to provide more information about your computer and the programs
you have added before anyone can give you much assistance. Which programs
came preloaded on your computer? How many applications start up when you boot
your computer? Which firewall are you using and what are the settings?

In which manner did you install Vista? Was it an upgrade or did you do a
clean install? What are your performance settings? Is your indexing complete
or is it still compiling the list? What kind of a network are you on and how
are you connected? If you are on a wireless network is there anything
blocking or interfering with your signal? What type of internet connection do
you have?

When was the last time you cleaned out all the unnecessary files and cookies
on your computer? Have you made any registry changes lately and/or do you use
a registry cleaner of any kind? Are you using any kind of tweaking software?
Are you manually controlling your page file or is Windows doing it for you?

Have you added any spyware or adware programs? Do you have any programs
monitoring or adding entries to your host file? Have you tried updating the
driver for your network card? Have you added any toolbars or BHOs to Internet
Explorer? Are you using any type of anonymizer software?

There are scores of knowledgeable people in these forums, the majority of
them having much more knowledge than me. They cannot help you if you don't
give them the necessary information they need to troubleshoot your problem.

Have a nice day.

C.B.

I agree with CB: dump anything with Norton on your computer! And that may
not be that easy either. After years of hell with Norton, I've learned my
lessons.

I use Avast on my systems, and it works great -- does not bog the system
down and does a good job.
