Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario 1685 laptop. It used to have Win98 but the previous owner installed Win XP. The problem is whenever I insert any USB device the computer will detect it but after a while I get an error message: "One of your USB devices has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it. Try reinserting the device.". In the case of the PCMCIA error message in Device Manager is: "This device cannot start". I have tried almost everything including reinstalling Win 98, ME, XP, 2000; getting 'updated' drivers; and trying to contact Compaq. But of course Compaq is rarely of any help. I downloaded HWINFO 32 which gave me detailed diagnostic of the system and from what I picked up everything seems fine. Could the chipset need better drivers (ALi Aladdin V M1541)??

Can anyone please help. Am at wit's end. If any other info is necessary, will gladly provide.

Thanks,

Nana

When did this problem start & have you installed any new software? Have you downloaded the latest drivers for the usb devices? Whats the info in Device Manager coming up as?

Hi there!
Am not really sure when this problem started. Seems the previous owner had it from the start. He did not even use the PCMCIA socket. The only software I have installed are: Microsoft Office 97, HWINFO32, Power Archiver, ... the usual day-to-day stuff. I did try to use USB and PCMCIA devices with just the OS installed (no application software) but with the same problem. I also installed some software bundles such as ALi Integrated Drivers version 2.05 to 2.09 for all Windows OS's. These are supposed to have everything, AGP drivers/utilities, IDE Cache Utilities, USB, PCMCIA drivers etc. But nothing worked.

In Device Manager, under USB controllers, the USB Flash disk I have connected is being shown as an Unknown Device, but working properly! The PCMCIA card is being detected with all the drivers installed but it Cannot Start.

Did you buy it from a shop as a 2nd user system? Or if not, was it sold as it had a problem?? Not really sure what's up with it, have you tried a google search to see if any thing come up??

I bought it from a friend. And it is possible that he did sell it off coz it had a problem. But I'd like to see if I can get it going. I have tried a google search, that's where I got the ALi Integrated drivers. Could the problem be with the hardware? Something cooked?
