Get Process Explorer (free) from <http://www.sysinternals.com/>, which
will show you each instance of svchost running (you'll have several).
Find the instance taking up cpu, right click, Properties, under the
Services tabl you'll find a list of the services it is running. Check
that list against the database at
<http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm> to see that the
service listed is needed.
If not needed, go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services.
Find the service in question, stop and disable it.
Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
You have some sort of virus/worm/spyware/etc...
Download and run adaware and spybot(can search on google
or cnet.com for these).
Having multiple svchost.exe is very normal but having one
that consumes a majority of your cpu indicates the above.
