I hope this is the right newsgroup for this problem; it appears
intermittently on a certain PC running Windows XP Service Pack 3:
sometimes the Srv driver does not start on boot. The immediate symptoms
are the following events in the system event log:
7023 The Server service terminated with the following error: Access is
denied
2508 The server service was unable to load the server driver.
7001 The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which
failed to start because of the following error: The system cannot find
the file specified.
I am not normally physically present at the computer but on one occasion
I was and I discovered by chance that by temporarily changing the image
path to system32\dllcache\srv.sys allowed the services to start. Of
course the dllcache and the drivers version of srv.sys are identical (as
compared with FC). I also tried a chkdsk in case some low-level NTFS
corruption was confusing the system but no errors were detected.
I am now out of ideas, so I'm open to suggestions.
