Problem with Slow Response in File Open - Drop Down List

In Ms Word and Excel when I go to file open, the drop down menu takes a long
period of time before it displays. In Windows Explorer it is instantaneous. I
uninstalled Office, ran Norton utilities looking for registry errors, and
then reinstalled Office ansd still the same problem.
I assume a reguistry key is wrong, or the machine is doing some looking for
additional drives or "Something" causing it to take a long time. It
eventually opens, just frustratingly slowly.

Any suggestions?
 
Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
 
You are a saviour. Embarrasingly I had gone through hoops trying to figure
this out. I had bought a NAS (Infrant Technologies unit, highly recommended)
a few months ago and had two mapped drives to the unit. I had not paid
attention to EXACTLY when I was getting the errors in Word. I only turn on
the NAS when I am doing a backup. When I did as you suggested, I saw the two
mapped drives that were not connected at the time because the NAS was off.
Then I turned on the NAS, and problem solved. The simplist things can be the
toughest to find sometimes.
