Problem with showing hidden files and foldes.

I cannot get WinXP to show hidden files or folders. Under
tools->folder options->view, the 'Show hidden files and foldes' radio
button is selected, but none of the hidden files are visible. Also, if
I select the 'Do not show hidden files and folders' radio button & exit
explorer, when I go back in the 'Show hidden files and foldes' radio
button is selected again, and still none of them are visible. I have
been looking online for help but keep coming up empty. It is driving
me crazy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
Actually thier are 3 boxes to chk or uncheck to get the OS to do that,thier
all next to "show hidden files folders"

What is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?
