Check the Compatibility options (in Tools | Options, Compatibility
tab). In particular, see if the "Set the width of a space like
WordPerfect 5.x" option is checked. If so, clear it.
Another thing to check is the following: Pressing Ctrl+Shift+J by
mistake (when you meant to press Ctrl+J to justify text) sets the
paragraph alignment to distributed. Note, however, that Ctrl+Shift+J
is not available in all language versions of Word.
I just noticed that it seems as if the "Set the width of a space like
WordPerfect 5.x" compatibility option requires that you also check the
"Use printer metrics to lay out document"; otherwise, the spacing
between characters and words will be incorrect.
