HOW CAN I GET MY PRINTER TO WORK AFTER UPDATING THE
WINDOWS XP. I HAVE A HP DESKJET 952C. I HAVE DOWNLOADED
NEW DRIVERS FROM HP WEBSITE AND IT STILL IS NOT WORKING.
THE DIANOSTIC TELL ME THE PRINTER IS NOT INSTALLED. IT
WAS WORKING FINE BEFORE DOWNLOADING XP. PLEASE HELP! SHAT
IS GOING ON.

Please turn off your Caps Lock. It's considered shouting, is extremely rude
and makes the posting difficult to read.

First this is an OLD printer. You need to ensure your LPT port is set to
EPP in the BIOS.

Second, you need to go into the Device Manager, click on Ports (Com and LPT)
look at the LPT port settings and ensure that Enable Legacy Plug and Play is
checked.

Since you upgraded and kept the printer connected, you also need to
COMPLETELY uninstall and reinstall the printer. Keeping the printer
connected during an upgrade corrupts the drivers. Follow the instructions
at:

http://www.coribright.com/windows/Article One.htm

Do NOT miss out on step 4 or you will end up reinstalling the corrupted
drivers.

After the reboot, install the new software you download from the HP website.
Do NOT connect the printer until the software tells you to do so.

Lose the all caps, please.

Which interface are you using for the printer? The 952c supports both
parallel port and USB. I'd recommend USB under XP, if your computer has USB
ports. (You'd need an A/B USB cable. It's cheaper than a parallel port
cable.)

If you are using the parallel port, make sure that the port is set up for
bi-directional communications (ECP or EPP) in the PC's BIOS setup. Also,
you might wish to try going into Device Manager and setting the parallel
port's checkbox for "enable legacy Plug & Play detection" for luck.

You may also want to start over with the drivers: uninstall them. Disconnect
the printer. Install the drivers. Connect the printer.

I use a Deskjet 970cxi (very close cousin of the 952c) under XP home, with a
USB interface. It works very well. The combination of the drivers and the
operating system is much more reliable than under Win98.

Good luck.
