I have a 3-yr old Canon S540 ink jet printer. The printer head no longer
moves horizontally.
I am wondering whether this problem can be fixed by novice or I should throw
it away.
Please comment on this problem. Craig

Throw it away and buy a Canon IP5200. Make sure you use OEM ink to
maintain the printhead.

make sure you use non oem refills to save money...

DAVE IS AN IDIOT AND TALKS ONLY OUT OF HIS....THERE APPEARS TO BE NO
DIFFERENCE :-D

Hang on abit...!

If the print head does not move horozontally, it ain't nothing to do
with not using OEM ink, it's to do with either the timing belt being
broken, the servo control or a simple sensor that has either broken
or blocked with debris.

When its suppose to be printing, you should be able to hear the paper
feed motor at least, if not then it could be something as simple as a
fuse.

Using non OEM inks isn't gonna cause the head not to move as
mentioned.

The Canon 4000 and 5000 series are darned good printers, not one
single manual nozzle clean required since I got it last June or
July.

When the printer stopped printing, it did not make any noise. What I
noticed was blinking green and amber lights.
I would like to take a look at fuse. Craig

Dave's right! The only difference you'll notice using non-oem inks is
the price.

If you have blinking lights it is not a fuse (not for this model at least).
Canon provides a set of error codes that are indicated by blinking lights.
You need to watch the lights and report back here on the exact sequence of
lights, for instance the green light can blink and then the orange light can
blink many times and then the green light will blink again.
How many times does the orange light blink before the sequence starts again?

What kind of ink are you using?

In other words,

Measkite thinks you should buy expensive OEM carts, but then save money by
not printing on your printer.

Tony,

I moved the printer to garage to dispose next week.
Upon reading your message, I counted the blinking.
What I saw was that blinking of green and orange light was alternating
three times (i.e. total 6 times with green and orange light).
Then, it pauses for a split second. And then, alternating blinking is
repeating as described above.
What do you think?

The garage may be the best place I'm afraid!
This is an encoder error, the only thing you can try to do is clean the encoder
strip. This runs across the width of the printer through the back of the
carriage and is a piece of plastic about 1/4 inch wide. It is hooked into the
printer at both ends and is easily pulled off it's mounts. Try cleaning it very
carefully with a damp cloth. To clean it all you will have to clean it up to
the carriage, then put the carriage in the cartridge change position and clean
the rest.
If that does not fix the problem then there is an electronic failure that would
cost more to fix than a new printer.
Good luck
Tony

Thanks Tony,

I will to clean the strip this weekend. I already planned to look up any
salee of those recommended Canon printer on Sunday.

Thanks again.
