Problem with ping

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 2000 pro installed.
When connected directly to an ethernet device via a cross
over cable or when connected to a network, I can ping
devices on the network but other devices can't ping my
laptop. When I try to ping my laptop from a directly
connected device, I get a host unreachable error. Can
anyone give me any suggestions as to what I can check?
This is something that just started happening because I
used to be able to do it.

hi hdsammy...

Unless someone has been changing the network infrastructure (switches, patch
cords, etc) I would run some diagnostics on your network card. You might
speak with Dell about the best way to do this and possibly some new
drivers...etc.

However, this does sound like a hardware or NIC related issue. If you can't
ping something...that is an underlying necessity for all communications to
work properly.

I hope this helps....

I would look at the subnet of your client compared to the others. Also check
to see if your laptop has a personal firewall software loaded. Both of the
above can cause this behavior.
