Problem with one website only

Kevin

For some reason, I can't seem to get into www.g4tv.com. Entering the URL by
hand makes no difference. I have never had a problem with the G4 site until
this week. I can't login to browse the forums, when I do manage to bring
their homepage up, and clicking any links on the homepage results in frozen
pages. I've waited for over ten minutes for a page to load and then packed
it in. Could someone just quickly check out the website to confirm it is a
problem on my end?

I'm on a DSL connection, running Windows XP Home Edition SP1. Zone Alarm
Pro firewall, AVG Anti-Virus, Spybot - Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware SE
Personal and Pest Patrol running on a 1.34 Ghz AMD processor with 512 MB of
RAM. Yesterday's scans were all clear, no infections detected.

Even if I could get to the G4 homepage, and find an email link, they never
return emails. So asking G4 for assistance is useless.

Hi Kevin :-)

Try the following and see it it helps:

Cannot access just one site

Cannot browse certain websites
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10082

Also..... try adding the site to your Trusted Zone.

or..

Go to the following and open with Notepad,
C:\WINDOWS\hosts (the one with no extension (not the .SAM one)
then delete any listing reference for the site you are trying to open.
Then Save and close.

and...

Internet Explorer Cannot Connect to Secure Web Sites
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/troub-10.html

Cannot Connect to Secure Sites
http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/secure.htm

or....

Why can't I browse certain websites

Hope this helps :-)

Thanks. I have no hosts folder in C:\WINDOWS so that option is out. No
changes have been made to Internet Explorer or my firewall for months, with
the exception of any critical updates from Microsoft for the operating
system and components. I have never had a problem with the G4 website until
this week. Can you bring up their homepage with no delays? Go to
www.g4tv.com to try.

Yes...I was able to bring it up just fine. However, there is a lot of
graphic and active stuff on that site. Try clearing your TIF's and see if
that will help.

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

The TIF size should be set to 50-60 MB. Larger caches tend to be more prone
to trouble.

Also, some updates can affect how things work. Did you do any recent
updates at about the time the problem started? Did you install or uninstall
all programs, Toolbars, popup blockers, etc. at that time? Do you have
Auto-Update enabled?

Hope this helps :-)

Thank you again. It's good to know that the site can be reached by other
machines so that would seem to imply some kind of glitch at my end or at
least between my machine and the site. My TIF size is at 50 MB, as it has
been for a long time. I haven't installed any updates recently, I recall
the last about two weeks ago. I manually install all critical updates, if
applicable, from the Windows Update website as they become available. My
security software has been in place, and running nominally, for years now.
I have never had any kind of malware infection on my system.

As I write this reply, I am attempting to open the G4 homepage once again.
It has been stuck now for about ten minutes. I'll bet good money that this
problem will suddenly fix itself, just as it also suddenly appeared. At
this point, this is merely a nuisance. If this problem were to affect more
websites I would more concerned. Thank you for your help and the great
links.

Hi Kevin :-)

You're very welcome! In addition, I might just add that, on occasion, I too
have had problems with some websites taking a very long..long..long time to
finally open. My ISP is Verizon. Sometimes it will take up to 5-7 minutes,
or more, for a website to finally fully load. Other times, I get a "Page
cannot be found" error. These are sites I know are good. However, the next
day, or two, or perhaps just hours later, the page will open as it should
and no more problems. I have been told that this may be due to heavy
traffic at the site, or maintenance being done by the administrator or
webmaster.
