Hi everybody
First of all, I tell you I'm new in this, so my question may sound
little fool
Here is the problem
I can play audio CDs but only directly from the CD drive, I mean onl
by pushing on the CD-ROM drive play button. However, when I try t
play audio CDs with bsplayer or winamp I can´t. I can't play an
other audio file like mp3, wav, wma. The only thing I hear whe
playing audio CDs from bsplayer or winamp or mp3, wma, wav is
faltering noise (It seems electricity)
I went to the control panel and everything seems to be fine

OS: Windows 2000 Professional SP

I don't know what to do. Help !!!! :

when playing the audiocd by pressing the play button the cd is played
through a direct cable from the cddrive to the mainboard on the mb.

when using winamp or playing mp3s the music goes as data through the ide
cable and is rendered through the DAC of the soundchip.

i dont know what the causes of your problem are. but they may include:

- sounddriver problems (find the newest)
- mainboard drivers and bios problems (find the newest)
- problem with another device installed which conflicts somehow with the
soundchip
- broken soundchip
- broken mainboard

i think the first ones are the most likely reasons.

good luck and best regards
marcel

Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager. Click on the + next to
CD/DVD ROM Drives, select the drive and select properties. On the tabs
that show next, select Properties and make sure "Enable Digital Audio"
is ticked.

If that doesn't work, you'll need a CD Audio cable to run from the
drive to the motherboard header.

Did sound work before and suddenly stopped working? You are sure the
sound is not muted? Did you plug the speakers into the correct audio
jacks?

Try running msinfo32 (system info) and select DirectX from the Tools drop
down to test the Directx sound output.

W2k is an older OS and Cmedia drivers should be working. Try uninstalling
and reinstalling the cmedia drivers and programs.

I don't think that audio cable matters anymore--although I may be wrong--but
my understanding is that every version of Windows after Win 95 sends audio
over the PCI bus. Every once in a while a thread about this very subject
comes up, and there are as many opinions about whether the cable is still
needed as there are participants in the thread.

Did you read the post - especially the part you snipped?

Hi again
acording to the cable which conncects the drive with the motherboard
I don't think It's the problem, cause I can play cds directly fro
the drive
Thanks adsci. Now I understand the sound system a bit better. So, th
problem is in the soundcard itself
I'd discard the bios problem since I used to play sounds with n
problems a couple of weeks ago
So I'll try to find the newest drivers for the soundcard
I don't remember, but I think the problem appeared after installing
ISA to PCMCIA card with an wireless internet chip. May it be th
problem

I've downloaded the latest drivers from www.cmedia.com.tw but nothin
happens
does anybody know a tool for testing hardware
I'll try to uninstalling directx 9.0c and reinstalling an olde
versio

Apart from ensuring the drivers are working, there's little you can do
unless you want to invest £100's in a decent oscilloscope and have the
time to diagnose circuits without the aid of a circuit diagram. You
REALLY have to know your stuff to do it. There is no simple tool you
can plug in that'll tell you it is or is not working.

Juanpa

from the replies and your answers:

Review the ISA / PCMCIA card installation, ie uninstall any software and
remove the card as 'you' suggest the problem started after installing this.
If this is the solution, try another ISA slot, if this doesn't work you may
have to try another Wireless solution (eg USB)

Secondly bring up the Volume Control by double clicking on the speaker Icon
in your system tray (bottom right) (also available in contol panel)
Then 'systematically' review the settings in there. Note there are a lot
more settings under 'Options, Properties'.
Also remember when working with the 'Volume Control' aplet to allow 'time'
for it to work (means reboot often)

Cheers
Paul.

The problem magically (I think) disappeared
I was plugging and removing cards. I removed the PCMCIA and othe
cards and turned on the computer. After a while I turned it off an
plug all as it was at the begining. And the problem jus
desappeard!!
What could be happening
Could it be an electricity problem

Thanks to al

I think Win98 (and Maybe ME) use the analog CD connection (3/4 wire
cable), but 2k and XP will only use the analog connection if told to do so.
In case you are wondering (at least in XP) you go to the properties of
the drive and uncheck "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device"
I don't listen to audio CDs but I leave it checked since I will be using
the cable (if I can't find another) to connect a future TV tuner card to
the aux portion of the MOBO.

I read what you told me, but the problem is with .wav .mp3, etc files
not with audio cds
