What e-mail client are you using? Outlook Express? Outlook? Something else?

Are you displaying all file extensions? (Control Pannel> Folder
Options> View> uncheck "Hide file extensions for know file types," if
using Win2K.) If you are, verify that the attachment is not in fact
other than an image file, e.g. xxxxx.jpg.scr. It is likely you are not
displaying all extensions and the file is actually an executable, i.e.
contains a virus you wouldn't want to open.
