i recently bought a dell dimension 8300 that came with xp
home. rather than upgrading to xp pro i did a clean
install in order to get rid of all of the garbage that
dell includes with the computer. problem is that although
the os does not recognize all of the old programs, when i
click on explorer, all of the old stuff still resides on
my hard drive. what did i do wrong? i'm getting ready to
do a clean install again and i want all of that garbage
gone!...

When you're doing your nice installation go ahead and do a big ol' format.
Contrary to popular opinion feel free to use FAT rather then NTFS and at
least your drive will be recognized with a semi-rational boot disk.

But anyways, it's going to give you a warning about installing two operating
systems in the same computer, go ahead and ignore it. Just keep plucking
along until you get to the place to decide where you want to locate it. Dump
it in the same folder, C:\Windows\ by default, format screen should happily
pop up next like a good doggie. Go ahead and do the big ol' format rather
then the quick just to make sure you get the junk out of there...

Give that a try, should - with any luck - do the trick.

Are you booting off the CD when you run setup? After the EULA screen it
should say detecting current OS's and then when it finds your currents
install your press the ESC key. The on the next screen delte the partition
by pressing D, then Enter, then L. It will bring you back to the Choose
Partition screen. Press Enter and it will bring you to the format screen.
I would suggest NTFS over FAT because it is more secure and faster. You can
find utilities on the internet to create boot cd's that read NTFS.

you need to delete the partition and then format.ntfs is
the preferrred file system use it

i get to that page with no problems but my computer has
two partitions listed... -:partition1 [FAT] 39 mb, and
c:partition2[NTFS] 114400mb

do i delete both and then just reformat as ntfs? or do i
need to recreate both?
