Hi.
I'm running windows 2000 sp4 and sometime in the last few
weeks the My Documents, and My Network Places links in the
left pane of explorer have stopped working. By this I mean
that clicking these links does nothing. No error, just no
response.

Clicking the my documents desktop icon or the My network
places desktop icon works fine. The folder is also
appropriately located if I go to c:\douments and settings\ etc.

I just spent 90 minutes on the phone with microsoft. See
problem below. It seems that the problem lies with the IE 6
cumululative security update KB824145. FYI.

If it started befor 11 NOV it can't be Q824145 which wasn't available before
that.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Frank:

Thanks for the info. I don't know when the problem arose.
The last few weeks was a guess. The MS tech and I installed
and uninstalled that hotfix (KB824145) twice and when it
was uninstalled the link worked but not when it was
installed, so I'm pretty sure that fix causes the error.

Under my folder options I have URL: Internet Shortcut which
opens with Shell Doc Object and Control Library. Looking at
the link you gave below really describes a different
situation. I could open Windows explorer, but out of 3
links in the left pane:
My Documents
My Network Places
Network and Dial-up Connections

The first 2 didn't work the last one did.
