Problem with MSN Messenger Upgrade message coming up after upgrade

I have a fairly new laptop (less than 3 months old) with Windows XP
Professional on it. I never use the messenger service, but still I
started receiving messages saying I have an old version of MSN
Messenger on it, and it needs upgraded.

I followed the link the message provided, and installed the upgrade.
I thought I was done seeing this type of message. The next time I
came on line, the same message popped up again. I thought, "well this
will stop after the next reboot." I was wrong.

In all, I've installed the 'upgrade' three times, and I'm still
getting this stupid message. I guess what I need to know is one (or
both) answers to two questons:

(1) Does anyone know a solution to this - in case I ever decide to do
this?

(2) Does anyone know how to deactivate the MSN Messenger, so it'll
stop logging on when I come on line? The options menu doesn't seem to
have an effect here. Other than changing operating systems (that has
crossed my mind), I'd just rather not to have to deal with this
problem again...

Thanks!

Greetings Robert,

1 -- You probably upgraded/installed MSN Messenger, Windows XP does not come with MSN
Messenger on it, it comes with Windows Messenger. Upgrade the latest Windows Messenger
instead, here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp

2 -- since it appears you're getting the message from Windows Messenger, you'll need to turn
off the automatic login in Windows Messenger. To do so, open up the main Windows Messenger
window (click the Start button, then All Programs then Windows Messenger if you can't find
it), then click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab, uncheck 'Run this program
when Windows starts' and click OK.

Hi! I am having a similar kind of problem. We just
purchased two new computers about 2 weeks ago. I have
been trying to figure out how to disable the pop-ups that
come from strange and creepy people through Messenger. I
tried following the instructions someone left a few
messages earlier than this one: the recommendation was to
disable messenger through admin tools/services/right
click messenger/properties/start up/disable but there is
a note there saying that that utility has nothing to do
with Windows Messenger. I then thought that I could
solve the problem by turning off the auto start but on
one of the computers there is no auto start option under
preferences. Supposedly they are both the same version
of XP and Messenger. Where is the auto-start shut-off?
Is it possible to just uninstall Windows Messenger? It
is unbelievably annoying and we don't use it and never
would.

Thanks.

I went back several pages and found your answers to other
users Jonathon. I should have looked harder first, sorry.

REMOVE HIDDEN WINDOWS COMPONENTS
First make sure that Windows Explorer is set to display
hidden files: In Explorer, choose Tools|Folder Opitions,
then View Tab, and set the option to show hidden files and
folders. Also remove the check form the check box labeled
Hide protected operating system files.
After clicking OK, you can navigate toj the C:\Windows\Inf
folder. Open Sysoc.inf in Njotepad and find the line
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7. Delete the
word hide, being careful to leave the commas. Save and close
the file. Next go to yhe Control Panel, choose Add or
Remove Programs,and when the applet opens,choose Add/Rmove
Windows Components. Windows Messenger should now appear in
the list. You can make other hidden components apper in the
applet by followinf the same steps.
