Problem with MSAV error message

Last weekend lots of us could not update, with many people reporting the
error message "Warning could not connect to the Internet. Updates have
failed. Autoupdater could not detect an internet connection."

Since this was the first time I had seen this message I assumed I had
something wrong with my computer's Internet connection, and spent time
experimenting with my firewall (disabling it, etc.), and even uninstalling
and reinstalling MSAV. I believe my wasted time, and probably other people's
wasted time, could have been saved if the error message had been more clear
(more accurate).

The problem in fact was not my Internet connection, since it was fine. If
MSAV had not said "could not detect an internet connection" but instead said
"the update server is unavailable", then none of us would have worried about
the update, and I would not have wasted an evening testing my computer, and
uninstalling and reinstalling MSAV.

Can Microsoft improve the error messages generated by MSAV so this does not
happen in the future?

Thanks,
Gene
