Problem with mp3s in XP

I have been having a hard time with a few mp3 files as of late

They will not play, will not transfer via IM (when trying to transfer, I get a "file does not exist" error - despite the fact that the files do indeed exist, and are several MB in size each), will not burn to disc. on top of that, it won't let me even delete or rename the files. right clicking on them only has half the options of normal files

I have noticed that the files giving me problems do not have the artist name and album name in light gray underneath the file name. When I mouse over them, the description is not detailed - rather, they just say "winamp media file"

The funny thing is, before I upgraded to XP, I was running ME - and those mp3s worked fine.

Has anyone ever run into this problem, or know how to fix it? much thanks!

Is there anything listed on the summary tab of the file properties?

Actually, no.. they're not wma. The mouseover says they are "WinAMP media files" They are, without any doubt in my mind, mp3s. They have always had the .mp3 extension and when running ME before, they were working fine. Besides, the WMA files would burn to disc.

In any case, I went ahead and tried what you said, and just like when trying to send the file to someone over IM, I got this message: "File not found. Please verify the correct file name was given." - also, note that the files DO exist and they are not 0 byte or even incomplete files. As I've stated before, those files have worked before on ME.

Also, there is no file properties option when right-clicking the file

Have you tried to convert them to WAV? You can use CDex.

They won't open up at all

In any case, I figured out the problem by myself. I simply transferred the mp3s to another HDD and they work fine now.

thanks for the help, everyone
