Problem with microsofts home page?

Ok, thats a bit vauge, but this is a problem that is
stumping me...recently, after installing XP SP2, I started
having problems accessing certain web sites
(www.microsoft.com for one), and an online game (City of
Heros) with my laptop. Thinking this was just a problem
with SP2 security changes, I finally got to the point I
reloaded the computer using restore disks. (Sony Vaio PCG-
GRT260G running XP Home SP1) the only problem is, after
reloading, I couldn't get the updates because I STILL
can't access microsoft's web site. I then updated drivers
from sony's web site, but I still can't access microsoft's
website! The funny thing is...I can access many, many
other web sites without problem. Now then, before someone
points to a firewall, I have no firewalls installed at
this time, and I have 4 other computers able to access the
site just fine, ruling out the ISP (I have one computer
used as a gateway, sharing the connection) So, I have no
idea where to go next.

ANY help would be appreciated. Please E-mail me, get me on
aim (advcoder), or post back here...either way, I need
help!

Thanks in advance!

This has nothing to do with dpi settings on the monitor.
The page never loads. It will go as far as "opening page
http://www.microsoft.com" and then never get any further.
The display settings should NOT be an issue, as this
computer was able to display the page no more than 2 weeks
ago! Did they change something at microsoft that would
cause this to be an issue?

To restate, the computer has no problems loading many web
pages...i.e. they complete the page opening, and d/l the
source/pictures/etc...just not the microsoft site. For a
site like this, it simply hangs at the "opening page."
Last time I checked, it works with a dial up modem though,
on this same computer. There is no firewall setup, and I
am running XP Home SP1. I have 3 other computers on the
same network that have no problems. I also have problems
with loading the game City of Heros. The game itself works
fine, but I cannot download any updates via the network.
Only by dial up.

Either change the Display Settings to "Normal Size (96 DPI)" from 120 DPI
OR change the registry

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]

"UseHR"=dword:00000000

--- I use Custom -- 108 DPI

Hi :-)

There have been numerous posters here who have the same problem after
installing the SP2.

It seems to be related to the JavaScript, which affects certain WebPages.
You may want to think about getting the Sun Java, which can work as well as
the MS Java, and co-exists on your system very well.

Courtesy of Jim Byrd:

There is good information concerning all aspects of the Java situation here:
http://www.javatester.org/installing.html

Be aware, however, that after Dec 31, 2007, MS will apparently no longer be
distributing Java or providing any support for Java including security
fixes. See here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html
(all versions - select using the dropdown)

Sun version here
http://java.sun.com/getjava/installer.html

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in
here:

There is a FAQ about the SWF plugin there.

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:

(all versions - select using the dropdown)

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in
here:
http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

For the MS Java VM, you may need to install v.3805 or v.3809 prior to
upgrading to v. 3810 if you didn't previous have MS Java v. 3805 or 3809
installed.

If your OS is Win2000 SP2, SP3 but NOT SP4 then you can download and install
the MS Java VM v. 3809 from here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._510A502BA8F9B6F19230BB2BCCE87D5474AC9DCD.exe
or here:
http://www.biologylab.awlonline.com...icrosoft.Q810030_W2K_SP4_5849/Q810030_W2K.exe

For Win2000 SP4, you'll need to re-install v.3805, from here:
http://www.download.support.safetec.net/msjavx86/msjavx86.exe
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/msjavx86.exe

For all other OS's:

Download and install the MS Java VM v. 3809 from one of the links here:
http://ftp.idilis.ro/windows/sp/jvm98/msjavwu.exe, or here:
http://secinfo.huji.ac.il/patches/Win-xp/msjavwu.exe

Then upgrade to v. 3810:

For all OS's except Win2kSP4 obtain v. 3810 here:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631 ,or here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m...l/MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe

For Win2k - SP2, SP3 - you can also obtain v. 3810 from Microsoft here:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-9b18-423356321682/Q816093_W2K_SP4_X86_EN.exe

For Win2kSP4, to get 3810 from Microsoft you now have to get Q816093 from
Windows Update Catalog - use the entry for Windows 2000 SP4 (this seems to
be the only Win2k option that has it) and then find 816093 in the list. You
can find directions for using the Windows Update Catalog functions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323166. (I am
informed by Torgeir Bakken, MVP, that if you rename the downloaded file from
here:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631
to msjavwu.exe It will then also work for SP4.)

Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just select which
one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart all IE
browsers. Here, courtesy of Michel Gallant, MVP Security, is a tiny utility
which allows you to toggle and view status of your current
Java VM vendor associated with IE:
http://www.jensign.com/JavaScience/SelectIEJVM/index.html

A note from Mitch Gallant:

"One note about the JVM Selector utility: If/when you install a new
version of Sun J2SE, you need to manually select to have Sun JVM as default
JVM for IE (in install), or after install via the JavaPlugin control panel.
This generates the necessary win32 registry entries, which must be present
for the utility to know about JavaPlugin. After that, the utility should
work properly."

Do you have the JavaScript plug-in installed?

if you have not already done so. The install includes a new jscript.dl

Try turning on prompts for Cookies and Active Scripting so you can tell if
anything is happening. You could also open the TIF viewer and see if you
already received it. Make your view Details and order by Last Accesssed.
The Cookie appears as a txt file. There is also a request to use ActiveX
which I couldn't see where it was being used but there is a script which
checks whether the browser can handle Shockwave Flash so I suspect there may
a be check for it which I missed somewhere.

The point is that all of that gets done before the page starts being
rendered; so either your User-Agent string or your version of Flash may be
affecting what else is being loaded and it may be that which is causing the
404.

If you don't want to bother with prompting you would also get a different
result simply by using the Security tab slider and setting it to High.

Don't forget to set your security settings back to whatever they were (e.g.
click Default) after testing. ;)

or ........

Flash & Shockwave not working

A few of things could contribute to the problem. Have you checked your
firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to on or block?
Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will block Flash unless you
turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it would not open Flash at all, and
it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I unchecked the
Kill Flash it stopped. Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see
them as ads or and kill it any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash (4X
5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

I also had problems specifically with www.microsoft.com, but mine hung at
100% - so maybe trying this is not for you!
But it was exactly my problem - 120 DPI on a Dell laptop at 1600x1200. 120
DPI on my desktop at 1024x768 was no problem.

That really isn't a solution because that then screws up
the display properties on everything else on the computer
screen in every program. In other words, poor design on
the part of Microsoft.com!
