Problem with low-res images

A

AM

I couldn't find an answer for this problem in the
Knowledge Base and I'm not sure if this is the right
newsgroup to post it in, but I bet someone out there can
answer this question real quick.
I'm designing web sites in a dial-up dominated region so
when I place a nice big picture on the Front or entry
page, I specify the high resolution image as the Image
Source under the Picture Properties, and create a low-res
version and then specify it in the Alternative
representations spot in the picture properties. All
according to instructions in the Help function of course.
I'm always careful to ensure that BOTH high res and low
res versions are being loaded to the web space, but when
you browse the site online, ONLY the high res picture will
load - and of course it loads slooowly, o so sloowly. Am
I missing something?

What is "a nice big picture"?
If your total page size in kb is less than 50kb I wouldn't worry about it. I
work from a 56k modem and many of my customers have that also. Simply use
your image editing program to optimize your photos etc. properly.

I've tried to use this myself and have never had the lowres image display
either, so I can't help you there. If it's a large picture, you might want
to "dice" it. This does NOT improve the loading time, but it does give the
illusion of something happening for the visitor. See
http://www.ziplink.net/~shoestring/dicer01.htm for example.
