problem with lists

I'm preparing a chronology in Word 97 like

1089
1088
1087

dates BC, but when I go to the next line Word automatically prints the
sequential number. How can I turn this off? Have tried the autho-format
box but it doesn't seem to work.

You disabled "Automatic numbered lists" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of
Tools | AutoCorrect?

It's an auto-correct feature, under "apply as you type" called Automatic
numbered lists. I'm not sure where it is specifically in W97, but that
should get you close.

I may have told you this before but I actually went to Barnhill School
when I was a kid more than three decades ago. Thanks again, and thanks
too to Coder Droid.
