I'm running 98se, IE6 on a Dell box Started to have problems with links in
both
orig. window and or 'new' windows:

Data is being retrieved but windows freeze. Have to click on orig. window
for anything to change. Sometimes nothing happens, and I have to close
all windows and start from new.

Is this in any way related to "hosts" files ? Have found 6; HOSTS.SAM (1kb,
SAM file),
LMHOSTS.SAM (4kb, SAM file), hosts (1kb, File), hosts.20040623-162259.backup
(1kb BACKUP File), HOSTS.001 (1kb 001 File), LMHOSTS.001 (4kb, 001 File).

Checked for 'spyware' and 'malware'; found nothing. Even stopped "eTRUST"
from
loading at startup. Can't seem to get to problem.
Searched Google; didn't help so I'm here, ha....Need help !

The only Hosts file that counts is the one without any extension.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Only concern yourself with the file named HOSTS. If you delete it and
reboot, do the problems persist?

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Assuming you are Sam, and purposely manipulate your HOSTS file either
automatically or manually, then those might be normal to have. If not, then
they would very likely be some sort of malware. XP would only use the HOSTS
file, capital letters with no extension. The others, if they're not copies
of hte HOSTS file, have to be part of some malware.

The HOSTS file is most commonly used to stop access for web sites that are
listed in it. If a site you want to access is in the HOSTS, with a
127.0.x.x, then that site is blocked from being accessed.

I think you need a good malware scan as I see already has been suggested.

Hosts.sam and lmhosts.sam are sample files that come with Windows. The .001
files are backup files made with some program.
IE ignores the hosts files with any extension.

Thank you.

Well, let's see...
I eliminated all files "Host", except 'host'. Downloaded and installed "host
update"
from: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

IE and puter seems happy for now; except when another anomaly
pops up sometime in the future, ha....

Thank guys for the assistance !

Added the message Bear, not to worry. TY again !
