I became 'legal' yesterday and entered my key and it was validated, the only
problem i have is that when i start up my computer, it is telling me that it
is not a legal copy, the message comes up each time i log on and it wont let
me get any updates. I'm not particularly computer literate, just a novice
really. Can anyone please advise me what to do to stop the error message?

Many thanks.

Hello Samantha,

Test with WGA diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts working and a
new Validation tool
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

Then, Have you tried going to Windows Update and checking for available
updates?
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an Administrator.

Can you go to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updates
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature update
with windows defender will fail until you have these f!les.

I hope this post is helpful, but we would highly appreciate it if you could
rate the pºst, so we can keep the community informed.

I agree with Engel's advice here. You should try the troubleshooting tools
at that location. Let's see if that takes care of the problem.

Did you get your new key through the Microsoft program, or by buying Windows
in a retail store? I thought there was some support available for folks who
have obtained valid keys through Microsoft's programs--but that should have
been documented when you bought the key.

Thank you so much for your replies

I will try the suggestions when i get back from work tonight.

I 'got genuine' on line, was e-mailed the key and am awaiting the c.d. from
m/s, its probably me to be honest, I know the basics but anything difficult I
am hesitant with, but your instructions sound easy to follow, thanks :)

Will let you know how I get on.

Have a lovely day each.

I can't tell you the number of times I've been working with such keys and
gotten really hot under the collar, called support, only to figure out after
the fact that I'd misread an 8 as a B or something similar. If your vision
is at all iffy, wear your reading glasses. If the key came in an email, use
cut and paste--but double check that nothing extra was included at the
end--an extra space, for example.

Hello again, its accepted the key and doesnt show the 'not genuine' notice
any more but wont let me update *sigh*, I cant log in as administrator, the
guy who built my computer assures me there was no admin password, but when i
click on it it asks for one. Its driving me crazy.

Will have another go tonight.

Thanks.

The username is "administrator"--and you'll get asked for a password. When
it asks, just hit enter.

I did that when it first came up with 'administrator' but all it did was
leave me with my desktop/ I think i'm going to have to wait till the c.d.
gets here and do a clean install, all sorts of things are happening, suddenly
my cd and dvd drive are showing there is no space so i cant use any disks.
I'm beginning to wish i'd never started this, but I really do appreciate your
help.
