Problem with Installation of Vista

Well I'm installing Vista on computer but it freezes right after you enter
the product key. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

I've got the same problem. I burned the iso to dvd. (downloadmanager confirms
complete download) Nero says there seems to be a problem with the block
size, but does the burning nevertheless after I click "Ignore". The computer
starts up with the dvd but after I type the product key in and press next it
says it can't open the winodws image file.

I have the same symptoms that Michael gets .. after I enter the product key
and press next it says it cannot open the windows image file. I created the
dvd using Roxio, not Nero and did not get the block size error that Michael
got. I am installing (or trying to install) Vista on to a clean Maxtor 100
GB drive, booting from the DVD. The primary drive is a Maxtor 120 running XP
Pro.

I also thought that maybe I had a bad download copy, so I have downloaded it
3 times. Each time the final file comes out to just over 2 GB when the
initial download says it will be over 3 GB. How big are your files?
(English, 32 bit).

Additionally, I tried to use the download manager and it errors at the
beginning saying it cannot handle a file of that size. I ended up just doing
a straight download (for over 4 hrs on DSL)

Any insight here?

I'm seeing the same thing. Is there anything else I can try? I'm booting
the DVD and plan to install to a new, empty drive. So I have no Windows
Defender or anything like that running. I get no error, I just type the key,
press enter, I see the read light on my DVD drive flash, and then the Vista
installer just sits there. The mouse pointer can still move, but everything
else is hung at this point.

I have this problem too... I am using a DVD ordered directly from Microsoft
so that likely rules out issues with ISO or daemon and all that. No matter
what I tried, it still locks up right after I enter the Product Key. This
includes:
Install from XP SP 2
Install from XP SP 2 in safe mode
Enable/disable search for updates
Enable/disable Activation during the Install

I beta tested Windows XP and the installation experience I had was smooth
sailing. Usually Microsoft betas are more robust but lately (e.g., WMP 11)
the installation routine itself appears to have issues more akin to an alpha
release. If we can't get it on our systems no matter how great the OS is it
doesn't do us any good... Microsoft, please help!

I actually beta tested 95, 98, ME, and XP. Other than the usual little
hiccups those went fine. Now, Vista has been completely different
story. The only machine I got a clean install with was an
under-the-min-specs laptop. But in the end is ran so slow I didn't use
it much. I was able to get another machine to install by putting XP on
it first, and then running the Vista installer from there. But I can't
seem to get Vista to put its boot loader on the drive with Vista so I
have to keep the XP drive in the machine too.

As for this problem, I downloaded and burned another copy of the disc
and I got past the key screen, but it stopped me again on the install
drive selection screen. It lists the drive to which I want to install,
I can partition and format the drive from there, but when I go to
install it informs me that Vista can't find a suitable drive.

I've given up with this beta release. I guess there is one more
planned, an RC. Maybe I'll give it another shot then, but for the most
part I've moved on from Windows, so knowing Vista well before the
release isn't as important to me as it would have been in the past.

Hello everybody! I thought I'd share that I found a work around for this
issue! Please note, YMMV but this is what worked for me.

Cause:
Even though the install appears to hang on the Activation, I believe this
issue is actually being caused by Setup's attempt to scan all hardware
devices to report back which are unsupported in case the user wants to
proceed with the install. In my case I believe the incompatible hardware is
an Intel integrated 82845 video.

Configuration:
Hardrives: two hard drives, C drive with Win XP SP 2, and D drive also with
Win XP SP 2 (trust me I tried this with D empty it I got the activation
freeze issue). Vista will be installed to D.
Video: I installed a newer video card in the PC (128MB 3D Fuzion GeForce
6200, Newegg for ~$30).
Displays: Dual display setup with both monitors attached to the GeForce card.

Steps:
1. Configure as described above
2. Boot into XP SP 2 on the D Drive
3. Disable the non-compatible device(s) in your BIOS or Device Manager in
Windows XP if not supported in your BIOS
4. Reboot the D Drive and verify devices still disabled
5. Launch Vista installation for Windows XP

Vista Setup
Be sure to install Vista to the D drive so that you can still dual boot.
Now, if that works for you be warned that it appears to me the beta nVidia
drives are not optimized for Vista yet so the Aero UI nearly brings the OS to
a halt. By disabling desktop compositing you'll see dramatically improved
performance.

Good luck all!

I have tried installing Vista 3 times now. Each time I have tried a different
DVD (disc) type. Every install attempt when it gets to the last stage
"Finishing install" I think thats what its called, it just sits there for
hours and does nothing. I end up aborting the install at it restores XP.
Also, to even get to that point in the install, it takes 2-3 hours, is that
normal?
My System: AMD 64X2 4800, 2 gb ram, 250gb wd hdd, 7800 geforce....
