Problem with IE and favicons

Hi, a while ago my IE started to randomly freeze (for 5-10 seconds) when
visiting websites as well as when using the address dropdown box and viewing
favourites, etc.

I reinstalled SP2 (WinXP) to see if it helped since installing SPs often
fixes bugs that windows has created over the months, but this didn't help.

After this I removed all temp internet files, cookies, etc using CCleaner.
Success, after the clean my IE opened instantly and I could view my
favourites without it freezing. At this stage I noticed it was when I viewed
webpages with favicons IE would freeze for 5-10 seconds. I confirmed this by
removing all my favourites, and putting them back one by one. Anyone one I
moved back with a favicon made IE freeze when I clicked favourites. I also
visited several websites with favicons, all made my IE freeze for around 10
seconds. I then tested several without favicons and they all loaded
normally.

So my questions are, does anyone know what could be causing this and if not,
does anyone know a way I can block/disable favicons from loading so I can
browse without going insane.

Thanks in advance.

Hi slick :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Download and install the Windows script engine 5.6 here:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/scriptdb.htm

or….

Exit all programs that are running.
Click Start>Run>then copy and paste the following command into the window

regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll, and then click OK or hit enter.

You should see "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded", click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, then register all the following
commands by copying them into the window one at a time the same as you did
the regsvr32 /I urlmon.dll above, hitting enter and then Ok after each one.

Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your answer.

I tried installing Windows script engine 5.6 which did not seem to help.

I then tried using 'regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll' (which succeeded). After this,
my problem was not fixed but it had improved. Instead of taking close to 10
seconds to unfreeze and load the URL, it was only taking about 4 seconds.

I then ran the rest of the commands and got the following results:

Shdocvw.dll - Succeeded
Msjava.dll - 'LoadLibrary("Msjava.dll") failed - The specified module could
not be found.'
Actxprxy.dll - 'Actxprxy.dll was loaded, but the DllInstall entry point was
not found. This file can not be registered.'
Oleaut32.dll - 'Oleaut32.dll was loaded, but the DllInstall entry point was
not found. This file can not be registered.'
Mshtml.dll - 'Mshtml.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point
was not found. This file can not be registered.'
Browseui.dll - Succeeded
Shell32.dll - Succeeded

Hi slick :-)

Ruling out any warez, it's very possible you may have a corrupted

Hi, I followed the instructions on mvps.org (deleted all TIF files, resized
my cache and then deleted my Temp folder containing TIF, History, Cookies,
etc using a seperate Administrator account).

I'm very happy to report it appears to have fixed my problem. So far I've
visited many sites with favicons and have done a bit of testing. (closing
browser and reopening a new one several times, viewing Favorites list with
sites that have favicons, using the address drop down list and of course,
viewing websites with favicons). Previously, doing any of these would have
made IE freeze for a variable amount of time.

I can't thank you enough for the time you have given to help me, I can't
remember the last time I've spoken to someone so helpful. Posting here was a
last resort before formatting (it was getting that frustrating) and I'm so
glad I did.

Thanks again.

remember the last time I've spoken to someone so helpful. Posting here was
a last resort before formatting (it was getting that frustrating) and I'm
so glad I did.

Thanks again.

You're very welcome! I'm truly glad to hear that you were able to resolve
your problem.
Good job on your part as well!

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.

Hi slick :-)

Ruling out any warez, it's very possible you may have a corrupted
History/TIF folder.

Delete the History folder and index.dat:

Change the URL icon using the "Change Icon" in it's Properties sheet.

Note: View > Source can also be used to view the Favicon URL.

just be re-written back to the Registry when you close IE.

IE stores the icons in the Temporary Internet Files cache. As soon as you
clear the cache (delete temporary files), you lose all of your icons.

Hi, I ran full scans with Microsoft AntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
(all fully updated).

Nothing was detected apart from the odd tracking cookie.

Thanks for all your help. :)
Hi slick :-)

Try running these programs to make sure there's not any spy or ad warez
on your system that is either causing the problem or preventng the
registering of the .dll's. Ru the both in Safe Mode with Hidden Files
enabled to be sure of hidden file detections.

Hi, thanks for your answer.

I tried installing Windows script engine 5.6 which did not seem to
help.

I then tried using 'regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll' (which succeeded). After
this, my problem was not fixed but it had improved. Instead of taking
close to 10 seconds to unfreeze and load the URL, it was only taking
about 4 seconds.

I then ran the rest of the commands and got the following results:

Shdocvw.dll - Succeeded
Msjava.dll - 'LoadLibrary("Msjava.dll") failed - The specified module
could not be found.'
Actxprxy.dll - 'Actxprxy.dll was loaded, but the DllInstall entry
point was not found. This file can not be registered.'
Oleaut32.dll - 'Oleaut32.dll was loaded, but the DllInstall entry
point was not found. This file can not be registered.'
Mshtml.dll - 'Mshtml.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry
point was not found. This file can not be registered.'
Browseui.dll - Succeeded
Shell32.dll - Succeeded

Thanks for your help. :)

Hi slick :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Download and install the Windows script engine 5.6 here:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/scriptdb.htm

or..

Exit all programs that are running.
Click Start>Run>then copy and paste the following command into the
window

regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll, and then click OK or hit enter.

You should see "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded", click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, then register all the following
commands by copying them into the window one at a time the same as
you did the regsvr32 /I urlmon.dll above, hitting enter and then Ok
after each one.

Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll

Hope this helps.

Hi, a while ago my IE started to randomly freeze (for 5-10 seconds)
when visiting websites as well as when using the address dropdown
box and viewing favourites, etc.

I reinstalled SP2 (WinXP) to see if it helped since installing SPs
often fixes bugs that windows has created over the months, but this
didn't help.

After this I removed all temp internet files, cookies, etc using
CCleaner. Success, after the clean my IE opened instantly and I
could view my favourites without it freezing. At this stage I
noticed it was when I viewed webpages with favicons IE would freeze
for 5-10 seconds. I confirmed this by removing all my favourites,
and putting them back one by one. Anyone one I moved back with a
favicon made IE freeze when I clicked favourites. I also visited
several websites with favicons, all made my IE freeze for around 10
seconds. I then tested several without favicons and they all loaded
normally.

So my questions are, does anyone know what could be causing this and
if not, does anyone know a way I can block/disable favicons from
loading so I can browse without going insane.

Thanks in advance.
