Problem with Icons

B

Bob Stringer

I have WinXP sp1.

Recently, the default icon for .zip files changed, from the
Winzip icon to the default (a rectangle with a folded
corner, containing what looks like a Window with a red and a
blue dot inside).

I looked at the Files types tab in Folder Options, and it
still showed the Winzip icon associated with .zip files.
Thinking of nothing better to do, I ran Rebuild Icons in
TweakUI, but that made things only worse. The zip icon
didn't change back, and now a number of icons have partially
lost their color (replaced with gray) and icons on the
launch bar are flatter.

Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Bob,

First repair the icons view using this fix:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (Line 4 - left)

See if the Zip icons issue is resolved, if not:
Open Winzip and unassociate all the zip files. Reboot and reassociate with WinZip.

That worked on everything but the original WinZip problem.

How odd. When I opened WinZip I got a message that it
*wasn't* associated with zip files, despite the fact that,
as I mentioned earlier, the File types tab in Folder Options
showed that it was associated with them. I hadn't seen this
message earlier because I never open WinZip. I always use it
by right clicking files instead.

In any case, WinZip had me click a button to renew the
associate again, and that fixed it.

Why would Folder Options show me that the association was
there, when it apparently wasn't?

But regardless of the answer to that one, thanks very much
for the help. This is the second time in a week that you
gave me a solution with blistering speed.

You're welcome Bob. Not sure why WinZip does this.
